The best routes for bird watching in Tenerife

Are you a lover of hiking and bird watching? Well, you’re in luck because Tenerife we have several routes where you can enjoy your hobbies in the same day. With the wide network of Tenerife trails, it is not surprising that there are all types of them, from the most complex to the simplest, those that culminate in a waterfall or on a beach. Endless proposals that lead nature lovers to want to visit us and discover our natural landscapes.

In addition, the Island has a wide variety of endemic birds, which are found in different ecosystems. For this reason, we propose several of the best routes for bird watching in Tenerife.

Malpaís de Rasca

The Malpaís de Rasca Nature Reservein the municipality of Aronais one of the best areas to see Flora and fauna. The habitats of coastal and inland cardonal-tabaibal. And it is also a perfect point to observe various species of seabirds and herons.

The route through the Malpaís de Rasca will surprise you with its landscape, formed by arms of volcanic lava that have created the malpaís. You can take a circular tour starting from El Palm Mar towards Las Galletas. One of the iconic points of this trail is the Punta de Rasca lighthouse.

Erjos Pond

Among the municipalities of The Silos and the Tank are the Ponds of Erjos, formed during the rainy season in the traces left by the extraction of aggregates and earth that took place between the 70s and 80s of the 20th century. They are a perfect point to observe birds linked to the aquatic environment, such as the redfish, coot, snipe and gray heron. Other birds that are often seen more irregularly are the alpispa or wagtail, the redshank and the guincho or osprey. Furthermore, this is an area of ​​obligatory passage for migratory birds.

There are different routes that can be done in the surroundings of the Charcas de Erjos and that invite walkers to appreciate the enormous nature that surrounds them. The routes are of different difficulty, so they adapt to all hikers. Thus, it can be done from a short four-kilometer route to a more difficult 21-kilometer route that reaches Monte del Agua.

Hidalgo Point

the area of Hidalgo Pointin The lagoon, has a wide variety of birds that can be observed. In fact, on the coastal path of the Faro de La Punta, also known as Camino de San Juanito or Camino de la Costawas placed some years ago a viewpoint for bird watching. This is a very simple path, but it offers the possibility of observing a wide range of birds. The gray plover, the gray heron or the common tern are just some of the species that can be seen in the area, as it appears on the information panels located in said bird observation post.

The trail begins at Playa del Roquete and reaches the Hermitage of San Juanito, passing by the lighthouse and Charco La Arena.

Tips for doing this activity

  • Go with the appropriate equipment, with appropriate footwear to walk through dirt or rocky areas.

  • Bring plenty of water for the entire journey, as well as sufficient provisions.

  • Put on sun protection and a cap or hat to protect yourself from the sun.

  • It is extremely important not to disturb or intervene in the normal development of the life of birds and other animal and plant species in the area.
