The Tenerife International Film Music Festival (Fimucité) begins its seventeenth edition this Friday with the largest program in its history, which will be dedicated to the world of comics and will include a film series, concerts at the Teatro Guimerá, at the Teatro Leal and in the Auditorium of the University of La Laguna, master classes and, as a closing ceremony, two symphonic concerts in the Tenerife Auditorium.
Directed by the composer and conductor Diego Navarro, for the second year in a row the program will start at Parque García Sanabria with a summer film cycle that will display a program of five films on Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons: the film adaptations from comics ‘Dick Tracy’, ‘Spider-Man: A New Universe’ and ‘Rocketeer’; and two Indian produced action films, ‘Krack’ and ‘Action Jackson’. This free experience includes popcorn, water and hammocks until full capacity is reached.
At the same time, the Sala de Arte Los Lavaderos in the capital of Tenerife is offering the exhibition ‘Pacheco & Azpiri, in memory of two greats’, dedicated to two of the most prominent Spanish comic book authors, Carlos Pacheco and Alfonso Azpiri. The exhibition will remain open until July 23.
The mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, José Manuel Bermúdez, pointed out at the presentation ceremony that Fimucité “is already a worldwide reference and is one of the events that generates the most cultural activity and which we plan to continue supporting”.
For his part, the Councilor for Culture, Santiago Díaz, highlighted the importance of holding part of the Festival in the city: “The great investment that cinema represents for Santa Cruz is essential, since the Festival is aligned with this objective, offering the whole world an image that allows this cinematographic success”.
The director of Fimucité, Diego Navarro, wanted to thank all the administrations for their involvement “for an edition that will be the largest in the history of a festival that is the oldest in Europe and a worldwide benchmark”.
On Saturday, July 1, at 8:00 p.m., the Fimucité 17 concert program will begin at the Teatro Guimerá by the Pop Culture Band, which celebrates its tenth anniversary with the show ‘Guardianes del Rock’. This proposal will make audiences of all ages vibrate through the interpretation of iconic melodies from comic book movies and superheroes, such as AC/DC’s ‘Shoot To Thrill’, Seal’s ‘Kiss From a Rose’, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ by Queen and many others included in titles such as ‘Spider-Man’, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, ‘Suicide Squad’, ‘The Avengers’, ‘Thor’ or ‘Iron Man’.
Gonzalo de Araoz (guitars) is in front of the musicians of the Pop Culture Band: Nuria Herrero (percussion), Francis Díaz (guitar), David González (keyboards), Daniel Lukacs (bass), Siddharta Dorta (drums), Cristo Delgado (trombone), Elio Bignotte (trumpet) and Norberto Arteaga (sax). In addition, the soloists Patricio González, Zuleyma Medina, Adrián Lugo, Francesco Panico, Juan de Araoz, Carlos Ortega, Paula González and the internationally recognized Canarian singer Cristina Ramos as a guest star will participate with their voices.
The concert program will continue the following weekend, firstly with two proposals that will be hosted by the Teatro Leal in La Laguna on Friday 7 and Saturday 8 July: ‘Electronic Penderecki: The Shared Universe of David Lynch and Stanley Kubrick’ and ‘Jazzdalamenti: Jazz tribute to Angelo Badalamenti’.
‘Electronic Penderecki’ will feature on stage a chamber ensemble made up of solo musicians from the Sinfonietta Cracovia orchestra, which made its successful debut at Fimucité last year, along with renowned Polish soloists Piotr Lato, conducting clarinet, and Maciej Zimka, with the accordion.
Directed by Katarzyna Tomala Jedynak, this production will pay homage to the Polish composer and conductor Krzysztof Penderecki, who died in 2020 and is famous for his recognizable compositional style in his atonal works, some of which have been part of the soundtracks of classic films. horror films like ‘The Shining’ or ‘The Exorcist’.
The second part will be eminently dedicated to Angelo Badalamenti, whose career was marked by the creative tandem he formed with the great director David Lynch, which resulted in mythical scores such as ‘Twin Peaks’, ‘Blue Velvet’ or ‘Mulholland Drive’, among others. .
The tribute to Baladamenti, who died at the end of 2022, will continue on Saturday at the ‘Jazzdalamenti’ concert, a tour of the composer’s work with a Big Band-like musical treatment. The composer Joseph LoDuca, a close relative, close friend of the maestro and an accomplished jazz guitarist, has taken charge of the arrangements and will participate in this concert, performed by the Big Band of the Canary Islands, under the musical direction of the prestigious saxophonist Kike Perdomo. Esther Ovejero will also take part, who will sing some of the most popular songs created by Baladamenti for film and television.
MUSIC FOR VIDEO GAMES AND SYMPHONIC CONCERTS
On Sunday, July 9, the Auditorium of the University of La Laguna hosts the concert ‘Heroes del píxel’, in which the music written for video games by the Danish composer Jesper Kyd, famous for his works for sagas such as ‘Hitman’, will take center stage. ‘, ‘Assassin’s Creed’ or ‘Borderlands’. The author will visit the Festival and attend the concert, which will be performed by the Fimucité Youth Symphony Orchestra, made up of students from the Professional Conservatory of Music of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the Superior Conservatory of Music of the Canary Islands, directed by José Antonio Cubas, and with the participation, for the first time, of the Polyphonic Choir of the University of La Laguna. The soprano Carmen Acosta will also perform at this concert.
The final touch of Fimucité 17 will be the symphonic concerts that the Auditorio de Tenerife will host on Friday 14 and Saturday 15 July, performed by the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra, the Tenerife Film Choir and the Polyphonic Choir of the University of La Laguna and dedicated to the world of comics and its protagonists, heroes and villains.
These concerts will feature renowned guests, such as Tyler Bates, a regular collaborator with James Gunn and Zack Snyder and composer of the music for ‘300’, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, ‘Deadpool 2’, ‘Watchmen’, or the series ‘ The Punisher’, accompanied by Lola Bates (voice and piano) and Sami Bates (voice and electric bass).
Fimucité FILM SCORING ACADEMY 2023
Between Monday, July 10 and Saturday, July 15, the eighth edition of the Fimucité Film Scoring Academy will be held, which includes a program of free master classes and round tables, with limited capacity, which will take place in the multipurpose room of the Scientific and Technological Park of Tenerife, located in Las Mantecas (La Laguna) and in the Auditorium of the CajaCanarias Cultural Space, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
The list of speakers includes authors such as Ben Watkins (Juno Reactor), the award-winning composer and arranger for film, games and contemporary music Jan Sanejko, the Danish composer Jesper Kyd (‘Assassin’s Creed’, ‘Hitman’), awarded with a BAFTA; orchestrator and arranger Benoit Grey; drummer Greg Ellis, one of the most in-demand professionals in the post-production phase of big-budget films; Grammy and Emmy Award winner Lolita Ritmanis and her Dynamic Music Partners labelmates Michael McCuistion and Kristopher Carter; the expert in sound techniques in the field of streaming Sara López; and various guest composers attached to Musimagen.
