SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, June 28 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The commission promoting the Popular Legislative Initiative (ILP) of the Volcanoes Law, made up of people affected by the 2021 volcanic catastrophe in the Aridane Valley, has already gathered more than 3,400 supporters and the collection of signatures is now moving to Tenerife , on June 27 and 28 and from July 3 to 7, while it continues in Los Llanos de Aridane.

The ILP promoting commission has appealed to the population residing on the island of Tenerife to stamp their signature in favor of this law, not only out of solidarity with La Palma, but because Tenerife is volcanically active and volcanologists hope that, Sooner or later, a new eruption will occur on this island of almost one million inhabitants (the last one was in 1909), a type of natural disaster for which current regulations in Spain are not prepared, as has now been demonstrated in La Palma, point out the promoters of the ILP.

The starting point of this collection of signatures through the streets and squares of Tenerife began yesterday Tuesday in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, in the Plaza de la Catedral, where signatures will also be collected on Wednesday 28 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. After a hiatus of a few days, on Monday the 3rd a table will be set up in the Plaza de España in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in front of the Cabildo, from 09:00 to 20:00.

On Tuesday 4, the collection of signatures will take place from 09:00 to 16:00 next to the façade of the Palace of Justice, on Avenida Tres de Mayo, and from 16:00 to 20:00 in front of the El Corte Inglés façade. On Wednesday, July 5, the place chosen is around the Parliament of the Canary Islands, either on Teobaldo Power street or the nearby Castillo street, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and then next to El Corte Inglés, from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. On Thursday 6, it will be possible to sign again in the Plaza de España, next to the Cabildo Palace, from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

On Friday, July 7, a representation of the commission promoting the legislative initiative will travel to the North of Tenerife, specifically to the historic center of La Orotava, where it will collect signatures from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., presumably in the square located in front of the Town Hall. Finally, on Saturday, July 8, the table with the documents to be signed will return to San Cristóbal de La Laguna, from 09:00 to 20:00, in the Plaza de la Catedral.

The commission clarifies that it has requested authorization for these locations, days and times, and, in the event that changes occur at the request of the respective municipalities, it will communicate them in future press releases.

The team promoting this popular legislative initiative recalls that, according to the Island Action Plan against Volcanic Risk approved by the Tenerife Council, at least 60,000 people in Tenerife reside in areas with a high or very high risk of volcanic risk. In addition, he stresses that Teide is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world, as it is the top of a highly populated and urbanized island, according to the UN’s Volcanoes of the Decade project.

Meanwhile, in La Palma the collection of signatures continues from Tuesday to Saturday at the Casino Aridane, located in the Plaza de España in Los Llanos de Aridane. From Tuesday to Friday, the hours are from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and on Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The text proposed for this law against volcanic catastrophes, which can be read in its entirety on the web page on this ILP https://www.ilpvolcanescanarias.es/, aims to ensure the right to a quick and fair socioeconomic recovery for those affected by eruptions, retroactively, the affected population in La Palma, where 7,000 people were evacuated (1,300 are still evacuated in Puerto Naos and La Bombilla) and close to 13,000 are those who have requested compensation from the Insurance Consortium. The ILP proposes that the expropriations in these cases be made at the price of the market value of the goods destroyed before the eruption.
