The Cabildo de Tenerife, through the Municipal Cooperation and Housing area, has awarded the project for the expansion and urbanization of the Vilaflor de Chasna cemetery for 2.7 million euros. The works, which are included in the Municipal Cooperation Plan 2022-2026, are 90% financed by the Cabildo and 10% by the City Council.
The acting counselor for the area, Zebenzuí Chinea, explained that the work will begin this summer, with a completion period of 24 months. The action includes the expansion of the cemetery with new areas of niches and a columbarium, a funeral home with two wake rooms, the construction of a new access from the TF-51 island highway, as well as the transformation of the current entrance into a pedestrian path. , to ensure accessible access from the road.
Zebenzuí Chinea added that during the execution of these works, efforts will be made to affect traffic and the activity of the old adjacent cemetery as little as possible, which will remain in use during the time that the works continue. He pointed out that the project also includes the construction of an interior car park on the plot and a space on the roof of the funeral home, furnished with benches, which allows the celebration of masses or events in the open air, functioning, on a day-to-day basis, as a gathering space.
“The Cabildo has put out tenders for these works on two occasions, leaving both procedures void as no bids were submitted. A circumstance that has been used to update prices and concentrate all the work planned in a single action,” he said.
The mayoress of Vilaflor de Chasna, Agustina Beltrán, stressed that “it has finally been possible to carry out this project, which has been left deserted on several occasions, and the population will be able to have a cemetery in optimal and modern conditions.”
Regarding the new funeral home, he announced that the building will have two spaces, an area for public use, with a reception, toilets, male, female and accessible, two wakes with a toilet and integrated office, and an interior patio. As well as a restricted area for funeral vehicles and administration, among other services and functionalities. The project will also be enriched with the construction of a multipurpose space that will function as a chapel.
