The heat continues to rise in the Canary archipelagowith the thermometers brushing this Monday 38 degrees Celsius in the lanzarote island and the 34 degrees at the tops of tejedahas forced the autonomous government to declare two alerts, one for maximum temperatures and another for the risk of forest fires.
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued an orange notice (important risk) for this Tuesday in Gran Canariabetween 11:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., due to temperatures that can exceed 37 degrees Celsius in the midlands of the island. The strong heat will also affect Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Tenerife and La Gomerawith yellow warnings (risk) in that time period for maximums that can reach 36 degrees.
The declaration of alert for risk of forest fires of the General Directorate of Security and Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands affects the entire territory of The iron, The Palm, La Gomera and Tenerife. In Gran Canaria, from an elevation of 200 meters upwards in the north of the island, and from elevation 400 on the south, east and west slopes. The high temperatures will be accompanied by winds, which may be strong on the peaks, and the gradual entry of haze in the midlands and high altitudes, especially in Tenerife.
The alert for maximum temperatures is declared in Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, due to an “important” episode of heat that begins this Tuesday in the midlands of the capital island, while on the coasts it will mainly affect the southern and western slopes. On Wednesday it will be extended to Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, especially to inland areas.
The Aemet prediction for this Tuesday is for intervals of medium clouds in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, with morning mists on the western slope. In the rest of the Archipelago, little cloudy or clear.
The haze will mainly affect the eastern islands and Tenerife. It will reach 34-36 degrees in the interior of the eastern islands, Tenerife and La Gomera, even 37 degrees in Gran Canaria, and locally 32-34 degrees in the rest of the islands.
This situation is repeated on Wednesday, with the difference that in the interior of Fuerteventura it will be possible to exceed 37 degrees, without ruling out that it also happens more locally in Tenerife and La Gomera. Temperatures won’t start to drop until Thursday.
As a result of the strong heat, the drought and the forecast of a large influx of people at the San Pedro festivities, the City Council of Agaete announced that it has launched the protocol in response to the alert for maximum temperatures and risk of forest fire that affects the municipality, taking extreme precautions and preventive measures.
“Given this situation of alert and risk of fire, access to the Tamadaba Natural Park area is prohibited, neither within the framework of the San Pedro Branch festivities nor for any other purpose, with the aim of preventing any type of of an incident in the Agaetense pine forest,” said the local government, which specified that “it will not be possible to carry out the fireworks display scheduled for Wednesday night, and The launching of flying boats, firecrackers and any pyrotechnic device by individuals is prohibited, in order to protect the security of the territory and its neighbors, in compliance with regional security plans.
