SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, June 23 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Héctor Gómez, has ruled out a negative impact of inflation on the evolution of tourist activity in the Canary Islands and in the country as a whole and has advanced that the forecasts for the next semester are “extraordinary”.
In statements to the media, the minister highlighted that month after month there have been increases both in the number of tourists and in forecast spending at the destination and in booking flights, so “everything seems to indicate that inflation It’s not going to have any kind of negative impact.”
Héctor Gómez has highlighted that both in overnight stays and in destination spending, the pre-pandemic indicators have already been exceeded, with data above 20%, and has stated that this does not respond solely and exclusively to the rise in prices, but to the fact that the tourist ” intends to spend more, experiment and live more, because we are living in a situation of notable growth”.
Gómez indicated that the will of the Ministry, after having spoken with all the agents of the sector, is to initiate a new dynamic of public-private management in terms of knowledge in the country as a whole and promote a new way of making policies hand in hand with the private initiative. In any case, he warned that the data “should not cloud us regarding the progress that we have to experience in public management in terms of tourism.”
In this regard, the minister stressed that Spain and, particularly, the Canary Islands are a world reference. “We have the obligation to continue advancing and modernizing management instruments because the European and international scenario and context is very competitive and there we have to recognize our great assets in terms of connectivity,” he added.
Héctor Gómez pointed out that the United States market has risen by close to 70% in recent months, but pointed out that the European market is consolidating and, in the case of the Canary Islands, “the indicators are extraordinary: they grow, grow and grow constantly” .
From there, he said that certain situations such as vacation rentals must also be addressed: “We must take a step forward in order to regulate and continue to bet on a destination of excellence, and that involves establishing criteria and quality standards that guarantee that we have both legal certainty and that the services are excellent”.
