SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, June 23 (EUROPA PRESS) –
Tenerife will host the fifth edition of the Meeting of the Seas from July 16 to 19, a congress that will analyze the challenges for the conservation of the oceans and seafood in the next decade.
Chefs such as Ángel León (Aponiente***), Quique Dacosta (Quique Dacosta Restaurant***), Albert Adriá (Enigma*), Andoni Aduriz (Mugaritz**), Rui Paula (Casa de Chá da Boa Nova**, Portugal ), the Chilean Lorna Muñoz (Travesía Restaurant, Chiloé) or the Italian Luigi Pomata (Luigi Pomata Restaurant, Cagliari, Sardinia) will be part of the program.
Together with them, some of the best oceanographers and marine biologists in the world will participate, such as Carlos Duarte, world leader in multiple branches of oceanography; biology and marine ecology Alexandra Cousteau, third generation of a family that pioneered the defense of the oceans and underwater life; Mina Epps, Director of Oceans at the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and one of the world’s leading specialists in marine biodiversity; and Ralph Chami, former assistant director of the International Monetary Fund and co-founder of Blue Green Futuro and Rebalance Earth.
The congress, which this year is entitled Conserve, has the Cabildo de Tenerife as its main sponsor, through Turismo de Tenerife, with the support of the Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries area.
The island’s acting Councilor for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Javier Parrilla, assured that this meeting contributes “to putting Tenerife’s fishing, which is one hundred percent artisanal, and the economy derived from this activity in its rightful place; but also to the entire scientific field essential to train, raise awareness and make sustainable use of the sea and its resources”.
The CEO of Turismo de Tenerife, David Pérez, indicated that it is “very important to work on the gastronomic value chain in its entirety, strengthening the primary sector, the sustainable values of the local and circular economy, the preservation and conservation of our seas; at the same time as valuing the talent of our professionals and our cuisine, increasingly known and recognized within and outside our borders. That great chefs, fishermen, biologists and scientists in general share this event on our island is one more example of the success of Tenerife’s gastronomic model and its relevance for tourism”.
The meeting will start on Sunday, July 16, with a popular day dedicated to gastronomy in Puerto de la Cruz. The Tenerife Auditorium, the Puerto Colón Yacht Club, the southern waters of the island aboard a boat integrated into the Charter for Sustainability or the Poseidón restaurant at the Iberostar Anthelia Hotel, will be some of the venues for the event this year.
Chefs from Tenerife such as Erlantz Gorostiza, Diego Schattenhofer or Braulio Simancas will also participate in the sessions of the Congress offering presentations or taking part in round tables, together with many others who will represent the island in the different tastings, dinners and activities of the event.
The congress will also be marked by the historic agreement reached in March at the UN for the protection of the oceans. After almost two decades of negotiations, the High Seas Treaty is the new legal framework of the United Nations to preserve marine biodiversity in international waters.
In this way, the conservation of the oceans and seafood will be some of the themes of this edition, which will also address the protection of cetaceans, tuna, gastronomic tourism, sustainable fishing models, ecology marina, as well as salted, smoked and pickled foods in the gastronomic part.
In addition to presentations, there will also be culinary demonstrations, round tables and gastronomic activities. The sessions will be broadcast via streaming through the digital platform of the congress (www.sansebastiangastronomika.com) and registration to access from anywhere in the world is free.
SARTON AWARD
The V edition of the Meeting of the Seas will reward this year Alexandra Cousteau, granddaughter of the famous commander Jacques-Yves Cousteau. Alexandra lives up to her last name and is an influential activist in marine ecology.
An expert scuba diver (since her own grandfather introduced her to the mysteries of the sea at the age of seven), filmmaker and photographer, she has led multiple expeditions with the aim of better understanding what are the problems facing the oceans today and what would be their consequences. possible solutions.
The critical situation of the seas and the pessimistic forecasts about its future led her to create the Oceans 2050 initiative in 2018, a global action program that aims to recover marine abundance and diversity. In Tenerife, he will receive the Sartún prize, with which every year the congress recognizes the work of people or organizations that work in favor of the conservation of the oceans.
