Hotels in the Canary Islands computed a total of 5,144,803 overnight stays in the month of May 2023, 5.76 percent more than in the same month of the previous year, when they reached 4,864,172, below the average, where rose 8.8 percent.
The Canary Islands thus exceeds the data from May 2019, prior to the pandemic, when it reached 4,952,913 overnight stays, and is also above the number of travelers (825,558 in May 2023 compared to 769,953 in May 2019).
Specifically, the Canary Islands received 825,558 travelers in the fifth month of the year, 4.55 percent more than in May 2022 (789,586), of which 208,739 were residents of Spain and 616,818 foreigners, and the degree of occupancy by place was it remained at 73.81 percent, higher than the average (57.6%).
Andalusia, Catalonia and the Valencian Community were the main destinations for travelers residing in Spain in May, with 20.4, 14.8 and 12.4 percent of the total overnight stays, respectively, with the Canary Islands in fifth place with 7, 4 percent.
For its part, the main destination chosen by non-residents is the Balearic Islands, with 30 percent of the total overnight stays. The following destinations are the Canary Islands and Catalonia, with 19.5 and 18.7 percent of the total, respectively.
In addition, and according to data from the Occupancy Survey in Hotel Establishments in May 2023 made public by the National Statistics Institute (INE) and collected by Europa Press, the average stay in hotel establishments in the Canary Islands reached 6.23 days, again above the national average (3.04 days).
In Spain, hotel overnight stays exceeded 32.4 million in May 2023, which represents an increase of 8.8 percent compared to the same month in 2022, when there were 29.7 million.
The highest occupancy rate in the Canary Islands in May 2023 occurred in the province of Las Palmas (6.53 days and 3,131,653 overnight stays), followed by the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (5.81 days and 2,013,151 overnight stays). ).
In the Canary Islands there were 565 establishments of these characteristics open last May with an estimated number of places of 252,373 and an employment capacity of 50,228 workers. The occupancy rate by beds in May was 64.66 percent while the occupancy rate of beds per weekend rose to 67.66 percent. The Balearic Islands presented the highest degree of occupancy by beds during May (67%), followed by the Canary Islands, with 64.7 percent.
On the other hand, the Hotel Price Index (IPH) in the Canary Islands stood at 180.71, 6.36 percent more, while in Spain this index is 169.96 percent (+9.43%). .
For its part, the average billing of hotels for each occupied room (ADR) in May was 105.49 euros, 4.18 percent more, much higher than the 8.15 percent average, and income from available room (RevPAR), which is conditioned by the occupancy registered in hotel establishments, reached 78.29 euros in the Canary Islands (68.63 euros in Spain), 7.45 percent more (+13.49% in the rest of the country).
