the acquaintance ‘tiktoker’ Canary Special Six (special_six) has once again put its finger on one of the most hurtful sores in tourism in Canary Islandswith the publication of a video in which he presents “the most apocalyptic ghost urbanization” of the Archipelago: Ten-Bel.
This complex, located in the south of the island of Tenerifewas built in the 60’sbeing one of the enclaves most valued by the sector in the Islands during the 80s and 90s. The space was the first holiday city to be built in Spain and It was a shock especially for resident tourism. There were many Canarians -in this case from Tenerife- who acquired a property in this enclave.
Debacle from the year 2002
As a curious fact, Special Six explains in the video that the name of Ten-Bel is the result of the combination of the terms Tenerife and Belgiumthe latter the birthplace of the billionaire businessman who promoted the project.
However, with his death in 2002 the debacle began. The heiress did not want to take over the management and sold the property to different tourism entrepreneurs.
The inability to adapt to the new business models within Canarian tourism, led to the companies went bankrupt and ended up leaving the area.
Currently, it is the closest thing to a ‘ghost town’ worthy of appearing in a movie like ‘Mad Max’. Abandoned and destroyed buildings, unpaved streets, garbage all over the place, without a doubt, a sad end, for what seemed at the time ‘a midsummer night’s dream’.
