He is a person who has left his mark for his talent, his good work and for being a gentleman of politics. Perhaps for this reason he was surprised on Friday when he announced, together with his partner Elisa Llanos, that the following day they would not take possession of the act as mayors of the socialist group in the constitution of the new municipal Corporation. Despite the insistence of the local and insular Executive, his determination did not go back. They consider that it has been the best for the party and that it is time to step aside after the results obtained in the May 28 elections. However, he will continue to be linked to the local group as deputy secretary and to the island Executive as secretary of Innovation and Organization.
-What is your decision?
“It is strictly personal. Although the PSOE raised 10% in votes, the expected results were not obtained and it has not helped us to get more councilors, and I believe that after eight years the strategy must be changed. Changes in politics have to be forced, and with a different person, that is why I will not continue ”.
-What would be the strategy?
“I don’t know how to do politics any other way. I am not looking for anger or confrontations, but consensus, trying to build and help, and it is clear that this does not reach the public or is not what the public wants. Therefore, we must step aside and establish another strategy that can serve the PSOE to govern, because what is clear is that we have not reached the people even though we believed that we had the best program, the most realistic and the one that was going to lead the municipality to become a better place to live”.
– Tired of being eight years in the opposition?
“It is hard, and more than the way in which the PSOE opposes, trying to be in almost all the nuclei and making politics compatible with work and family. It has been eight years with more than 100 proposals and it is not easy, it requires listening to people a lot, because many of them come out of contact with the public, such as the reduction of the IBI for large families, reusable cups at the Holidays May, the increase in money from the RAM or that fiber optics reach the entire municipality, to name a few examples. But it’s not the reason I quit.”
-Did you ever think that the PSOE could win the elections in Los Realejos?
“We thought we could improve the results. And not only us, many people thought so, even from the PP. Changing an absolute majority of 15 people is complicated and even more so with the wave in favor of the PP at the national level, although the votes in the four ballot boxes were almost similar”.
-Can you say that it is not a goodbye, but a see you later, or rule out returning to municipal politics?
“I admit that I like politics and I don’t rule it out, but I believe that other people have to be given opportunities. I will still be in other areas than the municipal one”.
