SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, June 21 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Cabildo de Tenerife, through the Institute of Social and Socio-Health Care (IASS), collaborates with the TeidELA association to launch the first specialized home care service in the Canary Islands, with which it aims to improve the quality of life of some 20 people with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).
The acting third vice-president and island councilor for Social Action, Marián Franquet, explained that this is the first time that a service of this type has been launched in the Archipelago and added that, thanks to the intervention of professionals, the aim is to avoid aggravation of the users. “We must maintain your personal ability to control, cope and make decisions about how to live according to your own rules and preferences,” she added.
The Island Corporation finances several specific projects promoted by the entity and which are also related to alternative communication systems and the improvement of autonomy, serving some 250 people thanks to a budget of more than 465,000 euros.
Franquet clarified that the projects contemplate different lines of action. He highlighted that, on the one hand, a specialized service is offered through which actions to promote and maintain functional autonomy will be carried out, as well as socio-sanitary assistance, through a series of activities and tasks provided by specialized professionals. In addition, an important task of information, orientation and awareness is carried out, “constituting ourselves as a point of reference for people with ALS and their families”, he added.
The counselor also valued the work carried out by Sinpromi, whose alternative communication project ‘Mis ojos vuELAn’ seeks to improve the exchange of information between people with ALS and their environment through technology, thanks to a budget of more than 167,000 euro. In addition, this initiative is constituted as a continuous support for the families of the patients.
