SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, June 19 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The La Gomera Airport exceeds the figure of one million passengers this Monday since its inauguration on June 21, 1999.

Thus, after 24 years of service, the airport has established itself as a key element in the external communication of its inhabitants and in the tourist development of the island and the Binter company, the main passenger carrier at the airport, has offered flights since its opening. .

In addition, there is a segment of passengers from general aviation, air taxis and other types of traffic, Aena reports in a note.

In 1999, the first year of operation of the aerodrome, 10,286 passengers passed through its facilities, in 2008 41,890 did so and in 2022, a total of 95,163.

La Gomera Airport has thus consolidated a sustained growth in traffic, only weakened in 2009 by the global economic crisis, and in 2020, by the Covid 19 pandemic, just like the rest of the airports.

Last month, the airport registered 9,349 passengers, 32.4% more than in the same month of 2022, and in the accumulated from January to May, 40,853, also increasing the figure by 33.6% compared to the same period in last year.

In both cases, it registered the highest percentage growth of the Canary Islands airports.

With this rate, this year it is expected to exceed the figure of 100,000 passengers, according to Aena calculations.

La Gomera Airport, located in the municipality of Alajeró, is prepared to receive up to 300,000 passengers per year and its facilities have been improving over the years, with the aim of making the transit of users through them as comfortable as possible. .

Thus, in 2016 a new baggage claim racetrack was installed, in 2018 a children’s playground, in 2021 the car park was expanded and, more recently, this June, all the seats in the terminal building were renewed.

Recently, the Binter company has announced the extension until December of its direct flights with the island of Gran Canaria, maintaining the program of double daily frequency on this route all year round, and which is added to the direct links with Tenerife, offering a total of 8 flights a day with the Colombian island.
