SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, June 11 (EUROPA PRESS) –
A group of people gathered yesterday morning, Saturday, in Parque de la Vega, in La Laguna, to take a walk to the Las Mercedes roundabout in honor of the person who died this week as a victim of a hit-and-run while driving in bicycle.
“The one that the Vía de Ronda introduced at the time, just like traffic, speed and haste. This road split the neighborhood in two, the tranquility of those who pass by and unfortunately last Tuesday the life of this neighbor” , point out the organizers of the call in a statement.
In a brief and heartfelt act of recognition, in which their relatives and relatives were also present, the conveners have verified in situ the lack of signage that warns of pedestrian and cyclist traffic, the absence of sidewalks that obliges, as they had some families, to make the daily route to the school in the middle of cars that access the roundabout at full speed.
“This island suffers from mobility plans that encourage alternative trips to the car. Any initiative in this regard becomes a dangerous and heroic act in a territory in continuous population growth and suffocated by its mobile fleet and the desire for development. This is still, if possible, in the current context of climate crisis”, they add.
“The absence of bike lanes in cities is anachronistic. A historical demand that never sees the light of day despite being dusted off for decades in each electoral campaign,” lamented the organizers.
