The program to cover the fields of the Infant and Primary Education schools that the Santa Cruz City Council is carrying out has led the Secondary Education Institutes (IES) and Vocational Training in the capital, which do not have covered fields, to request the Consistory to have the same sensitivity with the students who attend these centers.
The directors of the IES El Sobradillo, Teobaldo Power, Andrés Bello, María Belén Morales and San Andrés addressed a letter to the mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, and to the Councilor for Education, Claudia Reverón, as president of the School Council, requesting support for this unanimous demand of the five signatory centers. The formalization of the letter occurred after the City Council rejected, in a meeting, this request alleging that the competence of these centers belongs to the Ministry of Education.
The institutes state that their centers do not have any pitch or covered pavilion, many of them lack any other shady area in patios or gardens. They emphasize that having covered courts, in addition to improving the facilities during school hours, can serve as a complement to the sports offer of the municipality in the afternoon and on weekends. They also propose that, given the age of the students, between 12 and 18 years, having a complementary sports offer in the afternoon would help them to promote physical and mental health, and promote teamwork and social skills.
