SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, June 5 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The general secretary of the PSOE Canarias, Ángel Víctor Torres, has appealed for a review of the Canarian electoral law to try to ensure that the will expressed for the Presidency of the regional government by the voters is closer to what is finally approved in the Parliament, since “we are going to have a pact for losers that does not reproduce the will of the majority of the canaries”.
This was stated at a press conference held after a meeting of the PSOE Canarias Regional Executive Commission took place and in which he was accompanied by the members that make up the PSOE negotiating commission: Nira Fierro, Loli Corujo, Sebastián Franquis, Rosabella Cabrera and Elena Máñez.
“I think it is necessary that we reflect on the electoral law because, although the modification of 2018 was a success, heavily pursued and failed on other occasions, it undoubtedly needs a review and an update because the expressed will of the majority is not being respected. at the polls for those who voted for who they wanted to be president of the Canary Islands,” said the still acting regional president.
Ángel Víctor Torres has indicated that, in accordance with the decision made by the Regional Executive Commission a week ago, the Socialist Party has met with all the political formations with parliamentary representation, except with VOX; However, he can conclude that, unless there is something unforeseen, the agreement that is going to be made in the Canary Islands will be that of the Canary Islands Coalition, Partido Popular and Agrupación Herreña Independiente (AHI) and that the next president will be the nationalist Fernando Clavijo .
In this regard, Torres wanted to make it clear that those who make up this majority have not won the elections in the Canary Islands and remarked that the difference between the votes he has obtained compared to the rest of the candidates to preside over the autonomous community is “tremendous”. What’s more, he pointed out that while his candidacy achieved 285,000 votes, the one headed by Fernando Clavijo obtained 167,000, which means a difference of 118,000 fewer votes.
“The canaries have voted for the president to be Ángel Víctor Torres in the first place and Fernando Clavijo in third place”, which is why he has announced that the PSOE, as the main force in the Canary Islands Parliament with 23 seats, will make the necessary proposals in the new Legislature to review the current electoral system and try to ensure that the will expressed for the Presidency by the voters is close to what is finally approved in the autonomous Chamber.
MESSAGE TO PP.
Likewise, he has sent a message to the president of the Popular Party of the Canary Islands, Manuel Domínguez, who will presumably be vice president in the new Executive, and has asked him what he thinks of Alberto Núñez Feijóo’s statement that the list with the most votes is allowed to govern. “We have not listened to him, if he has allowed himself to be seen, to respond to a question that the leader of the Popular Party is saying clearly,” Torres pointed out.
In turn, he has criticized the fact that the Canary Islands Coalition said four years ago that the PSOE’s will was nothing more than to get him out of all the institutions and, after the elections on May 28, “they have been running to close quick agreements in Arrecife, where we are the first force; in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where we have won the elections, or in the Cabildo de Tenerife, which has also clearly declared itself in favor of the Presidency of Pedro Martín”.
In any case, Torres wanted to send the public a message “of encouragement, illusion, empathy, effort and work”: “They are going to have us defending what we have achieved in these four years, to have the best State of well-being, the best data on employment, justice, equality, balance between the islands and, therefore, the will of the Canaries will be what encourages us every day in the face of any adverse situation”.
