SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, May 26. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The general secretary and PSOE candidate for re-election as president of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, visited this Friday the land where the first hydroelectric plant in Tenerife is scheduled to be built, a project valued at around 800 million euros.
Torres was accompanied by the candidate for re-election as president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Pedro Martín, and also by Airam Puerta, a socialist candidate in the municipality of Güímar, and stressed that “to continue advancing in renewables, with projects like the one in Guimar , socialist governments are necessary”.
The leader of the Canarian socialists has indicated that the fight against climate change is a “priority” for the PSOE, an issue that has been made clear since the beginning of this Legislature with the declaration of the climate emergency by the Government of the Canary Islands and the work developed throughout these years, which has also allowed the approval of the first Canary Islands Law on Climate Change.
This norm, he has detailed, has in turn allowed a significant boost to clean energy in the archipelago, “with details that are symbolic but that reflect the change in these four years”, such as that the Canary Islands has gone from having 400 homes with subsidized self-consumption photovoltaic energy to more than 10,000, and from 600 megawatts of clean energy to more than one gigawatt.
This commitment and work, includes a note from the PSOE, has also allowed the Canary Islands to already have a plan for the management of marine spaces for offshore wind power, “at the same time that onshore wind power and geothermal energy have been promoted” , in addition to promoting this hydroelectric power station in Güímar, which will also make it possible to address the recovery of the environment where it will be located and achieving an essential storage center for the introduction of clean energy in Tenerife.
Torres wanted to be clear when claiming that, in order to make these projects a reality, it is essential to receive the support of the electorate this coming Sunday.
“We need those votes on Sunday to continue walking what we have done these four years and put the commitment to clean energy on the table with clarity and courage,” he said.
MARTÍN: “A BEFORE AND AFTER” IN THE GENERATION OF RENEWABLES
For his part, the socialist candidate for re-election as president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Pedro Martín, stressed that the Güímar hydroelectric plant project will be “a before and after in the generation of renewable energy in Tenerife”.
He recalled that the Island Council is also promoting a 200-megawatt project that will allow the active participation of the island’s population through the acquisition of shares “to ensure that the money generated by renewables does not go to large multinationals , to large companies, but rather that it stays here, and distributed among the people who work to generate wealth in Tenerife”.
The event was also attended by the candidate for mayor of Güímar, Airam Puerta, who stated about the hydroelectric plant project that it is a dream “that took a long time”, but that it has been achieved by “fighting together to make a fundamental achievement for the municipality.
