The parties once again promise trains, roads and better public transport to alleviate the road collapse in Tenerife

This historical problem has worsened over the years and has not yet found a solution. The parties that aspire to govern the insular Cabildo from the next May 28 They include some proposals in their electoral programs. Beyond the demands of those who have to face queues for hours on the roads every morning, there are also the complaints from those who use public transport. Bus and tram users demand more security, more lines, frequencies and connections with the most remote population centers, as well as avoiding overcrowding.

The PSOE, which currently governs the island, proposes to decentralize the activity of the Cabildo between the north and the south of the island with the start-up of two new multi-use buildings. The intention is to bring the services closer to the population and thus avoid displacements. The candidate for re-election in the Cabildo de Tenerife, Peter Martinalso proposes to stagger the entrance times to the University in order to avoid collapses on the roads at peak hours.

All the parties that currently have representation in the Cabildo and that are running in the island elections (PSOE, Podemos, CC, PP and Ciudadanos) speak in their sustainable mobility programs. In this line, the improvement of public transport is a common point. The PSOE proposes to buy more buses, hire more drivers, guarantee free transportation and increase night lines beyond the metropolitan area.

For its part, “in the face of mega-infrastructures”, Unidas Sí Podemos proposes a preferential Bus-Vao lane, greater frequency and punctuality of buses, free transport and bike lanes. The party that presents Manuel Marrero As a candidate to preside over Tenerife, he proposes companies to develop collective transport plans by bus for people who work far from home, “starting with the Public Administration”.



For the party, the ideal is to guarantee access to health, educational, social, cultural, leisure and citizen security services in a journey that lasts less than 30 minutes.

Likewise, Podemos is committed to the purchase of electric buses that can be recharged with renewable energy sources. The PSOE also defends the reinforcement of electric mobility by increasing and improving the charging points on the island.

Ciudadanos has chosen as a candidate for the Island Council Enrique Arriaga, current insular councilor of the Highways and Mobility area and one of the main defenders and promoters of the Motor Circuit project. The party’s electoral program proposes increasing investment to maintain roads, increase road safety and the creation of sustainable urban mobility plans.

In this sense, Arriaga has proposed this Wednesday to carry out two new tram lines, one between the Meridiano shopping center and the North Pier, and the other, between the hospital of La Candelaria and Añaza.

Likewise, with the purpose of improving air quality and reducing emissions, Cs is also committed to promoting electric vehicles and encouraging the use of collective transport.

Ease the collapse for tourists

The creation of Bus-Vao lanes is also present in the parties’ proposals. In its electoral program, the PP begins to talk about mobility, referring to the impact that collapses on the roads have on tourism. The formation of Lope Afonso also adds that the traffic and the volume of vehicles is affecting “negatively the economy of the island in general and the tourism industry in particular.” For this reason, he proposes expanding the TF-5 with a third lane and a Bus-Vao lane “prioritizing sections of higher density in tourist areas and access to industrial estates.”

This idea is also shared by CC, with Rosa Davila to the head. “It does not seem reasonable that the clients of our hotels, who pay to enjoy a vacation in a privileged environment and nature, find congestion, noise and pollution worse than they have in their usual city of residence in Europe at their destination” , reads the program.

While all the formations are committed to the third lane of the TF-5, Unidas Sí Podemos proposes to reconsider the project and re-evaluate the initiative taking into account the criteria of environmental sustainability. PSOE, PP and CC also defend the closure of the island ring. However, Podemos warns that this route, as it passes through San Juan de la Rambla, will leave “notable landscape, environmental and social effects”.

To communicate the areas furthest away from the metropolitan area, CC and PSOE also propose the inclusion of the taxi in the strategies. CC points to the shared taxi through agreements with the municipalities.

To solve the mobility problem, the PP and CC are in favor of building trains on the island. The candidate for island president lope afonso It intends to “lead the search for financing” for these works in the north and south of Tenerife. CC also points out that “the present and future development” of the south will require “better communication with the capital’s metropolitan area.” “The most sustainable route is the train.”

The PSOE does not mention the trains in its electoral program. Even so, Pedro Martín has recently ruled on these projects, and has demanded that the Government of the Canary Islands first clarify how much money they will receive from Europe and the regional Executive “before embarking on million-dollar adventures.”



United Sí Podemos is totally against these infrastructures. According to the party, the small size of the island does not justify the implementation of high-speed rail systems, “which reduce the number of possible stops and makes it difficult to insert into the current highway corridor.” For the formation of Manuel Marrero, this type of proposal is framed in developmentalist models “from forty years ago”.

“Introducing trains would mean an additional fracture in a fragile territory like Tenerife, even more so in the case of the Northern Region, densely populated and with a more complex territorial and agricultural fabric,” reads the program.

Macroprojects, another great concern

In this sense, only the PP and Unidas Sí Podemos have ruled on the creation of macro-projects in Tenerife, one of the great concerns of the population in this last legislature. For his part, Lope Afonso is committed to “promoting” the Tenerife Motor Circuit. In the line of the current government, the PP considers that this infrastructure will generate “complementary economic activity” and give “relevance” to the Island. On the opposite side is the purple formation, which proposes to repeal the Land Law, which has provided coverage to projects such as Cuna del Alma in Tenerife or the already canceled Fuerteventura film city, Dreamland.

Drago Verdes Canarias, with Carmen Pestano as a candidate, she also aspires to transform the culture based on individual transport through an investment of resources in increasing the frequency and efficiency of collective transport.
