The urban garden of Tacoronte, a successful model to imitate in Tenerife

The councilor of Environment and Sustainability of the City Hall of tacoronte and number two on the United Yes We Can list to the Cabildo de Tenerife, Carmela Diaz Vilelaemphasizes that the urban garden of Tacoronte and its collective composting bin with red worms are “a model of success that can be extrapolated to the rest of the island of Tenerife and also from the Canary Islands ». Díaz believes that this experience in urbanization The Watchtower is “a clear example of the success of this type of facility”, which has also existed for years in places like Dona Chana Parkin the municipality of the orotava. The Department of Environment She was the promoter of this project that «has been very well received by the citizens of Tacoronta. At present, there is a waiting list to be able to get hold of a plot for self-cultivation in this space located in the neighborhood of La Caridad.

Carmela Diaz Vilela recently showed colleagues and candidates of the left-wing coalition United Sí Podemos the evolution of the project and the implementation of a vermicomposter in which the users also participate to generate the compost. Furthermore, he noted that previously those lands had no use of any kind and have come to life after the installation of the garden.

Concepts like food sovereigntyimprovement of diet and mental health, use of abandoned urban land or cultivation of fruits and vegetables were protagonists during the visit, which in Vilela’s opinion, “supports the positive nature of these projects.”

There is currently a waiting list to be able to access any of the plots in this space

“All the objectives set in the municipal ordinance that regulates urban gardens have been met”, said Vilela, who also highlighted the figure of “the dynamic person within the urban garden that has helped it work much better.” In his opinion, «it is in line with the concept of building coexistence and social work. With the entrance of the facilitator in the orchard, people became even more excited about the project». The objective is that this example can be adapted to other places on the island and in the Canary Islands.
