Dogs will be able to travel on buses and trams starting June 1

The dogs will be able to travel in the buses and the trolley cars of Tenerife starting next June 1st. In the case of titsa, will be located in a designated space, while in metrotenerife They will go in the last wagon that has double doors in the direction of travel. Animals must be provided with a leash and muzzle to use public transport. The Cabildo, through the Mobility area, promotes the measure approved in full in January 2022. The Minister of Mobility, Enrique Arriaga, explains: «People who have a pet prefer to move with it rather than leave them at home, but, unlike many European cities, most of the Spanish public transport places many obstacles to the dogs. That will be resolved on the Island as of June 1.” Public transport in Tenerife thus adapts to Law 17/2021, which considers animals to be sentient beings and modifies the Civil Code to adapt it to their nature and the relationships between them and human beings as members of the family.

In order to reconcile the use of public transport by travelers and pets that are not in carriers, dogs will not be able to use it at rush hour, from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. from Monday to Friday or, in general, when the crowd of people is such that it impedes the safety of the passengers or the animal itself. In the case of Titsa, pet dogs will be admitted in the buses that are accessible, are marked on the outside and have a space set aside for them, since they will not be able to occupy a seat. For its part, Metrotenerife establishes that pets will be located in the last wagon that has double doors. In addition, the tram carriages in which dogs are allowed to travel outside their carrier will be duly marked and dogs will not be allowed to occupy a seat. During the trip, the animals must be subject to a leash that keeps them in physical contact at all times or less than 50 centimeters from their keeper and provided with a muzzle. Both by bus and by tram, only one dog per vehicle can travel. In addition, the driver or staff may prevent the travel of those dogs whose behavior can be classified as aggressive, which shows signs of lack of hygiene or request that an animal get out of the vehicle if it bothers other users.

Liability insurance

The civil liability insurance included in the price of the ticket only covers the passenger and in no case the companion dog. It will be the responsibility of the carrier for any damages that the animal may cause, as well as for being up to date with the corresponding administrative and sanitary authorizations in each case. Since October 2015, Titsa already allows the access of pets to the interior of the buses let them go in their carrier, which must not exceed the measurements of 60x35x35 or ten kilos in weight, as well as duly documented guide dogs. As of May 2016, Metrotenerife also allows travel with guide dogs and those domestic and non-dangerous animals that are transported in small receptacles and conveniently prepared so that they do not dirty or bother other users. Therefore, animals traveling in carriers are exempt from the new regulations, as well as guide and assistance dogs that prove to be authorized for these functions, which will follow the rules established to date. As of June 1, dogs will be able to travel with their owner on public transport in Tenerife.
