United Sí Podemos joins the petition to give the name of the activist Lolo Dorta to a park in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

United Sí Podemos (the alliance formed by Sí Se Puede, Izquierda Unida and Unidas Podemos) in Santa Cruz de Tenerife has supported this Friday the initiative promoted by the Demand Camp for the Right to Dignified Housing and by the Santa María Tres Neighborhood Association Barrios, so that the Chicharrero City Council gives the name of Manuel Alejandro Dorta Encinoso, better known as Lolo Dorta, to La Estrella park, in Santa María del Mar, where this social activist, who died last February, was from.

USP’s mayoral candidate, Ramón Trujillo, stresses that “it is a fair and well-deserved recognition by Santa Cruz of an irreplaceable person, who fought tirelessly, until the last moment, for the social rights of the population, in especially for the most humble”.

The mobilizations that he led in favor of the right to decent housing deserve special mention, through the aforementioned campsite in Santa Cruz, of which he was the spokesperson, and which became the probably longest protest for this right that has ever taken place in the history of Santa Cruz, highlights USP.

This May, the aforementioned groups registered their petition with the City Council, in which they also allege that the La Estrella park “owes a good part of its good condition and current existence to the great work that Lolo Dorta himself carried out for years claiming it” .

In this letter, addressed to the mayor and then with almost 900 signatures collected and the support of 10 citizen associations, it is also requested that a sculpture be erected in this public space in homage to Lolo Dorta, for which the collective promoters of this initiative count already with a recognized sculptor who will carry out this work altruistically as well as businesses and individuals willing to collaborate in its financing.
