The Canary Foundation He has been carrying out analyzes of the waters of the different beaches on the coast of Granadilla de Abona for weeks and has verified that in almost all the studies carried out, samples of contamination by fecal discharges have been found, although below the regulations. “The Canary Islands have had a serious problem with the discharge of wastewater into the sea for decades. For this reason, from the Canarina Foundation we are carrying out a study of seawater quality in the bathing areas of El Médano as a pilot experience ”, they point out from the foundation.
“The information about the analyzes carried out by the City Council of this town is apparently not very accessible to the population. In addition, there are cases of people who have become ill after bathing on the beaches of the municipality, which suggests that it may be related to fecal contamination of the waters”, they comment.
“Since April we have begun to carry out the analyzes and we have found the presence of bacteria indicating fecal contamination in all the samples. Although the values that we have found to date have always been below the limits established by the regulations, the simple fact of the presence of these bacteria already indicates that there is fecal contamination where there should not be,” they explain.
“For all this, we believe that it would be worth questioning whether these legal values are adequate or should be reviewed. For this we will publish the results weekly. In case the concentrations are high, we will do it immediately”, they point out.
