Aromatic Malvasia Ayosa Mistsproduced by SAT 9036 Viticulturists of the Güímar Region, of the DO Valle de Güímar (Tenerife), has been recognized with the award for Best Canary Islands Wine 2023 in the Official Agrocanarias Contest organized by the Canarian Institute of Agrifood Quality (ICCA), attached to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands.
This was announced this Thursday at the Presidency of the Government in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands, Alicia Vanoostende, and the director of the ICCA, Basilio Pérez, after the jury’s decision of an edition that counted with the participation of 178 samples belonging to producers from all over the Canary Islands with Denomination of Origin (DO), produced and bottled in the Archipelago.
Regarding the awards, the special distinction to the Best Image and Presentation 2023 went to the wine Lágrimas de Malvasía Barricain the category of young dry white wines and barrel-fermented wines, from the DO Lanzarote, produced by Producciones Arraez Bravo SL The Gold Medal and Best Organic Wine of the Canary Islands 2023 for Ferrera Albillo Criollo, in the category of young dry white wines and barrel-fermented wines, from the Canary Islands DO, produced by Bodegas Ferrera SL
Finally, the Great Gold Medal and Best Wine Chosen by Canary Islands Winemakers went to Pico Cho Marcial Tinto, in the category of young red wines and barrel red wines, from the Canary Islands DO and produced by SAT 9036 Viticulturists of the Güímar Region.
A sector with a future
The regional manager of the area, Alicia Vanoostende, explained that “we are committed to a sector that has a future, improving and simplifying aid for cultivation, bottling, regulatory councils and island wineries. In this line, we have carried out studies such as the diagnosis of the vineyard, and projects for the sanitation of plant material, in addition to promoting agroecology in the cultivation of the vine”. “We support the external projection and promotion of our wines in renowned fairs prestige such as Fenavin or the Barcelona Wine Week, together with the development of conferences with the associations of oenologists in the Canary Islands and training projects in gastronomy, such as the ‘Volcanic Treasures’ initiative, with the aim of increasing the presence of Canarian wines in restaurants and hotels in the archipelago,” he said.
Finally, Vanoostende stressed that during these four years of the legislature, 13 Agrocanarias contests have been promoted with 1,600 samples presented and analyzed of products such as wine, gofio, salt, oil and cheese.
The director of the ICCA, Basilio Pérez, pointed out that “It is essential to strengthen the wine subsector, giving security to both current and future producersand in this, the promotion plays a prominent role in the figure of the Agrocanarias contests”. “I appreciate the work carried out by all the tasters, as well as the staff who have been part of the organization, participants and, in a special way, to today’s winners,” he said.
It should be remembered that the jury, made up of about twenty tasters, including gastronomic journalists from the peninsula and the United Kingdomevaluated, according to the type of came, to 64 young dry whites/barrel-fermented white wines; 57 young reds/barrel reds; 27 semisweet; 3 sweets; 2 sweet duck; 14 dry rosés; 1 tea wine; 3 sparkling; and 6 breeding.
