The approval of the majority of landowners in the El Mojón Partial Plan to the agreement proposed by the Arona City Council, to receive the urbanization, will mean ending a blockade situation of almost 25 years and will allow the development of one of the most sought-after urban areas in the Canary Islands, in the vicinity of the nucleus of Los Cristianos, where hotels will be builtresidential squares and commercial establishments, as well as two public parks and an area for fairs, congresses and shows.
Pending the signing of the agreement between the Compensation Board and the City Council, which will take place this month -so both parties foresee-, the next steps will be the public exhibition of the document and the subsequent vote by the Plenary. From there, the process of requesting and granting licenses will begin within a maximum period of two months.
The Arona City Council and the owners of the land agree that the more than 900,000 square meters of the partial plan will be an economic boost for the municipality with the largest population in the South, with an investment of more than 1,000 million euros and the creation of ” several thousand” jobs.
The future of El Mojón begins to become clearer after numerous bureaucratic, legal and economic setbacks, including the 2008 crisis and the pandemic. The last stumbling block occurred in August 2020, when the City Council rejected the receipt of the urbanization works, which led the property to file an appeal in court.
The arrival of Miguel Villarroya to the Presidency of the Compensation Board, in March 2021, replacing Juan Francisco Reverón, who held the position for more than 20 years, meant a change in the strategy of the body that represents the owners: The judicial procedure was paralyzed -the time of the process would prolong the blockade of the partial plan- and the technical meetings with the Consistory were resumed. That bet has ended up paying off and will take shape, in a few days, with the signing of the agreement.
