MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS TENERIFE 2023: A threatened continuity

The CC in Garachico, the PSOE in El Tanque, the CC-PP in Los Silos and the SSP-CC in Buenavista are facing the elections with the slight advantage that comes from governing in the last 4 years, but with the certain threat that a handful of votes, or a new pact, they could put an end to his stage of government. The PSOE is going all out in two of its old strongholds, Buenavista and Los Silos, after the change that occurred in the 2019 elections.

The municipal elections of 28M in the four towns of Isla Baja (Garachico, El Tanque, Los Silos and Buenavista del Norte) will be a vote-to-vote fight on the fine line that separates continuity from change. The CC in Garachico, the PSOE in El Tanque, the CC-PP in Los Silos and the SSP-CC in Buenavista are facing these elections with the slight advantage that comes from governing in the last four years, but with the certain threat that a handful of votes, or a different pact, they could put an end to his stage of government. He PSOE goes all out in two of its old strongholds, Buenavista and Los Silos, after the change that occurred in the 2019 elections, and hopes to be able to maintain the absolute majority that the now disabled Román Martín achieved in El Tanque. In Garachico, the Socialists come from very bad results, with only one mayor. Two former mayors return to the electoral posters to try to regain power both in Garachico, where Ramón Miranda leads the A’Gara project, supported by Nueva Canarias, and in El Tanque, where Jesús Fariña returns to the PP.

The final results are really uncertain in these four towns, all with less than 5,000 inhabitants, where a few votes can change everything from 28M. The appearance of Vox is a mystery that alters the political tableau and if they obtain representation in any locality, they could even become a key to government. In Garachico and Buenavista, Vox will not have competition from the PP and will be the only formation on the right.

garachico. The Canarian Coalition, led by the current mayor José Heriberto González, will compete at the polls with A’Gara, led by the former nationalist mayor Ramón Miranda Adán; PSOE, and Vox, who finds himself with a municipality in which the PP does not appear. In May 2018, Ramón Miranda founded the Garachiquense Association with the intention of returning to active politics in 2019. He could not run, but his party achieved (with the initials of the PP by an agreement in extremis) three councilors and 28% of the votes. The next 28M will be measured at the polls to José Heriberto González (CC), who was his right hand in the local government and has been mayor since July 2011, after the resignation of Miranda himself. The Socialists got 13% of the votes and were then left with a single mayor. If there are no numbers for an absolute majority, any mayor could be the key.

The tank. The PSOE of Mayor Esther Morales wants to revalidate the absolute majority that it obtained in 2019 with Román Martín, later disqualified. He will face CC, Vox and PP, where the former mayor Jesús Fariña returns. After several mandates being important in local politics, Pablo Estévez does not appear, who in 2019 achieved two mayors with Nueva Canarias. Of the four headliners, only Fariña has previous experience leading a roster.

The Silos. Silense voters will be able to choose between Canarian Coalition, PP, PSOE, United Yes We Can and Vox. The irruption of these last two parties could affect the PSOE and the PP above all, with whom they share part of the electorate on the left and on the right. Macarena Fuentes (CC) aspires to maintain the Mayor’s Office against a PSOE that won the 2019 elections with more than 40% of the votes and now changes its candidate by betting on Carmen Luz Baso. United Sí Podemos wants to fish in the fishing ground for PSOE votes and could make possible an alternative majority if it achieves representation.

Buena Vista del Norte. The only Mayor of Sí se puede in Tenerife, that of Antonio González (SSP), is at stake for continuity against his current partner, Coalición Canaria; the PSOE, which won the 2019 elections by just 51 votes, and Vox, which will not have to compete with the Popular Party in the Buenavistero case either. The forces between the Socialists and SSP are very even in recent years. Obtaining representation in this Northern Corporation guarantees, except for surprise in the form of an absolute majority, that any mayor can be essential to form a government, a circumstance that in this mandate has benefited the nationalist Ángeles González. Former mayor Eva García (PSOE) will try to recover a historic place for his party.
