The dream of a group of boys from Tenerife comes true. After many difficulties, especially financial, the team Robotix Aldeatron will take part from 18 to 21 (Thursday to Sunday) in the Moroccan Open of the First Lego League (FLL) held in Marrakech. These boys, between the ages of 12 and 15, want to once again demonstrate the high level of science that emerges from young people on the Island.
Aldeatrón Robotix earned the right, after overcoming the regional and national phases, to dispute the World Championship in California scheduled for this week – last year it was in Houston and there were no shortages. It was already the eighth tournament at the international level, but it was not possible for financial reasons. However, based on tenacity, and thanks to the support of their environment and companies, they have managed to complete the budget of just over 5,000 euros to guarantee this eighth presence outside the borders of the Island.
“A family team,” they say, First Lego League from San Miguel de Abona, although there are boys from Adeje or El Médano. They are eleven years old this season with a great list of winners. They have participated seven times in a National Final, always qualifying for foreign tournaments, including three world championships. They obtained the Winner Award at the Global Innovation Award, after passing a selection process among 40,000 teams from around the world.
The adventure this season began in the first days of May 2022. After a hard work of 44 weeks, an average of 8 hours each, they presented their innovation and technical (robot) projects at the FLL Canary Islands 2023. There they managed to qualify for the Grand Final FLL Spain. In Cartagena (Murcia) 47 teams took part. Aldeatrón achieved a place in the California International Open with his third prize, in addition to obtaining the same position in the Robot Game. His innovation project is HOPES (Home Overload Prevention for Electrical Safety), a plug adapter that warns and prevents overloads in power strips and extension cords.
First Lego League is a global program to promote the STEAM areas (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) among young people from 3 to 16 years of age from more than 100 countries, through a proposed challenge. This year it was to solve the problem of energy production, transport, distribution and consumption
Teamwork, values and social commitment. are the characteristics of Elisa Martín (12 years old), Sofía Filippova (15), Kabir Motwani (15) and Samuel Alemany (13). They form Aldeatrón Robotrix and will go to Morocco together with their trainers, Tony Cuesta and Yazmin Geldbord, plus Anna Dobinski as a companion. The goal is to enjoy the experience and give it your all. Tony Cuesta summarizes to conclude: “There is a quarry of Innovation and Technology in Tenerife but not enough effort is dedicated”. Yours has been worth it. Marrakech awaits you.
