SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, May 14. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The Spanish Society for Plant Conservation Biology (SEBiCoP) has requested the inclusion of the ‘gomero pigeon beak’ in the Spanish Catalog of Threatened Species with the category of “endangered”. Several members of the Association for the Conservation of Canary Biodiversity (ACBC) have actively participated in the elaboration of the technical report justifying the aforementioned request.
On behalf of this association, on June 6, 2022, they sent to the Department of Ecological Transition of the Government of the Canary Islands a request for modification of the Canary Islands Catalog of Protected Species that included 18 species, among which was the rubber dove beak (Lotus gomerythus ). On December 14, 2022 and March 30 of this year, he reiterated this request without any of these requests receiving a response.
In addition, on March 23 of this year, the Association registered a popular initiative question in the Parliament of the Canary Islands, regarding the cataloging of the aforementioned species, which has not been answered either.
From the Association they request, urgently, from the Council of Ecological Transition of the Government of the Canary Islands the adoption of measures for the conservation of the species and the protection of its area of distribution, to avoid its imminent extinction; the beginning of the file for its inclusion in the Canary Islands Catalog of Protected Species; that instructions be given to the technical services to draw up their recovery plan, which should be approved immediately after cataloging; and that its inclusion in the European Union Habitats Directive be proposed.
