SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, May 10. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The Government of Spain, the Government of the Canary Islands and the Cabildo de La Gomera have completed the administrative procedure to promote the Gomera Strategy36, an instrument that lays the foundations for a sustainable economic, social and environmental model with more than 230 projects to be carried out until 2036 on the island that will be financed in public-private collaboration.
The Minister of Finance and Public Function, María Jesús Montero, signed this morning together with the President of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, and the President of the Cabildo de La Gomera, Casimiro Curbelo, the protocol at the headquarters of the Ministry of Finance in Madrid after almost two years of coordination between the parties and with the involvement of the ministries of Transport, Mobility and the Urban Agenda; Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation; and Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge.
The project revolves around several concepts. The first of these is called La Gomera Ecológica y Circular, with actions aimed at achieving better use and enhancement of the island’s natural resources through the promotion and development of science and technology, to contribute to a more balanced relationship. and sustainable with the insular territory.
La Gomera Digital and Intelligent includes actions aimed at achieving the socioeconomic transformation of the island through the digitization of services and products. Resilient and Inclusive La Gomera contemplates actions aimed at achieving a society more involved in the construction of the common through actions of dissemination, awareness and citizen awareness in matters such as sustainability, science and technology.
This initiative aims to respond to the great challenges that arise in the near future of the island territories, both at the level of the Spanish State and, also, at the global level, becoming a great scientific-technological field that drives and promotes socioeconomic development. fairer, more supportive and inclusive for the inhabitants of the island.
The Government of Spain will transfer 2 million euros contemplated in the General Budgets of 2023 for the creation of a technical office and a first agreement will be finalized that must be closed before the end of 2023 with items already identified in the budgets of the three administrations for actions of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, which add up to an investment of more than 113 million public euros.
The roadmap marked out by the three public administrations involved seeks to advance in the transformation towards a green island and face the challenge of decarbonisation, improve the water cycle, waste management, sustainable mobility, in addition to turning the island into a a dynamic platform to implement pilot projects. The strategy aims to increase the quality of life in the island territory, promote training and employment along with greater investment in R+D+i and attract collaborations, knowledge, resources and alliances for all of this.
Likewise, given the economic dimension of the set of actions, it is committed to the interaction of different agents, from public-private investment, with the aim of doubling investments and guaranteeing efficiency in terms of attracting and executing economic resources during the fourteen years of validity.
In addition to the initial objectives, the development of the strategy will allow the modernization and transformation of the business fabric and the improvement of the social and economic resilience of La Gomera, facilitating the consolidation in the implementation of renewable energies, energy self-sufficiency, by as well as the implementation of investments to promote the transfer of knowledge to companies and promote collaborative environments.
