Although in the first information Santa Cruz did not appear as one of the municipalities in which the State would build social housing on the lands ceded by the Ministry of Defencefinally it will be part of the 394 with which the Canary Islands will have and which are distributed between Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (43), La Laguna (300) and (50) Santa Cruz. The latter will be built on a plot owned by Defense that is located in the Southern General Highway. This information was provided by the Government of Spain after the Council of Ministers approved the purchase of land from Defense to build some 20,000 homes in 36 municipalities.
The Santa Cruz City Council confirms that the site in question is located in the Southwest district, where it is known precisely as the military site. It is also noted that this land went up for auction in the midst of a pandemic, in July 2020, although it ended up being withdrawn due to a formal defect.
Specifically, it is a plot of just over 4,000 square meters, whose initial valuation, according to the auction process, was set at 454,512 euros. The land is in a situation of urban development, like that of the La Laguna barracks, that is, it will have to be reclassified so that housing can be built.
