Arona activates its V Municipal Plan on Addictionswhich will be in force during the period 2023-2026 and that it will take into account not only addiction to substances, but also those referring to behaviors, such as the abusive use of mobile phones, social networks, gambling or video games.
The new plan was presented by the mayor, José Julián Mena, together with the councilor for Education, Julia Raquel Morales, before the Municipal Commission on Drug Dependencies and Addictions. It has members of the Municipal Corporation, representatives of the State Security Forces and Corps, management teams and social educators from the institutes, professionals from the Canary Islands Health Service, associations and organizations, as well as trade union, sports and technical representatives from municipal areas and the Addictions Unit.
Arona is a pioneer municipality in Canary Islands in treatment and action against addictions. Its first plan dates from 1999. During the validity of the fourth, between 2019 and 2022, it reached 6,000 students in Early Childhood and Primary Education and 4,000 in Secondary. They are joined by 1,218 mothers and fathers who were supported in the educational task of their children, and 3,000 people who were reached in specific awareness actions.
