SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, May 4. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, highlighted this Thursday that the unemployment register for the month of April presents the “best data” on unemployment in the last 15 years, confirming that the Canary Islands “has come out of the pothole” that generated the pandemic and zero tourism.
In statements to journalists before participating in an informative meeting of ‘Diario de Avisos’, he indicated that after unemployment fell to 3,699 people there are already 80,000 more workers than when the ‘Pact of Flowers’ acceded to the Government, placing special emphasis on young people, with 30% less youth unemployment -14,000 more employees than since the pandemic-.
Torres has also valued the improvement in unemployment indicators for women and the long-term unemployed and claimed the figures when the Canary Islands have 400,000 more inhabitants than in 2008.
Along these lines, he has pointed out that “this is the path”, that the archipelago has “economic strength”, with almost a million people working that reflect the “true recovery” of the islands’ economy despite the “many adversities” that it has had to be overcome since 2020 when the economy was “closed” due to zero tourism.
He has commented that the Canary Islands was the autonomous community most affected by its economic dependence on tourism, to which was added the volcanic eruption of La Palma and a migratory crisis, and compared to those who said the archipelago had no “future” and that there would be a “tremendous poverty”, “all the parameters have been improving”, including the inclusion rate or poverty.
The president has also valued the “essential social balance” to reactivate growth, stressing that employment “is the best vaccine against any adversity, even against the increase in the cost of living”, because if there is no employment, “the situation would be critical” .
In this sense, he pointed out that at the end of April “the majority” of island family units “have managed to have economic compensation and work” something that is “very important” also “from personal improvement.”
