The mayor of Garachico, Jose Heriberto Gonzalez (CC)has recently shared a reflection through the social network Facebook in which he states that if urgent measures are not taken to improve the University Hospital of the Canary Islands (HUC) or provide more means and services to the “misnamed hospital of the North”the around 17,000 inhabitants of the four municipalities of the low island (Garachico, Los Silos, Buenavista and El Tanque) “should be treated again in the Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria University Hospital (Hunsc)». For González, the hospital popularly known as La Candelaria, “has much better conditions than the HUC in light of statistics, the opinions of experts and reality itself.”

The nationalist president shares the opinion of the delegate of the Satse union in the HUC, Alexander Gordillowho recently told Europa Press that he admits that this hospital “has been one of the worst staffed” and is also at the bottom of the infrastructure, with fewer operating rooms than the Candelaria Hospital“apart from when the lower island It began to be managed by the HUC, the waiting list increased considerably and it is a deficit that has been going on for years.

The president believes that if urgent measures are not taken, it would be necessary to return to the previous situation

He HUC closed 2022 at the tail of the public hospitals of the archipelago with a surgical waiting list of 12,289 people6.8% more than in December 2021, and an average delay time of 198 days when a year earlier it was 171.5 days, according to data from the Canarian Health Service (SCS).

“For years our region had Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria as a reference hospital, which meets much better conditions than the HUC,” laments González, who does not stop demanding improvements in health care: “From my humble position as mayor of garachico I demand that all political parties put solutions on the table to correct this situation. There can be no further delay. We cannot and should not wait any longer. We need solutions and important improvements in the HUC or the construction of a new hospital and, of course, provide all the necessary services to the, for the moment, misnamed Hospital del Norte”, located in icod.
