SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 17 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The two medical associations of the Canary Islands have issued a joint statement on Monday in which they warn that the new ‘Strategy + AP’ on Primary Care services on the islands undermines their powers as it grants functions to other professionals.
The Colegio de Santa Cruz de Tenerife already presented allegations when it developed the first strategy in February 2019, which have been put back on the table in February of this year, and the General Directorate of Assistance Programs, in the recently presented reform, continues to violate some of its powers.
From the Canary Islands Medical Associations we agree with the Ministry of Health that solutions must be provided to the “multiple problems” that affect Primary Care but understand that “they must be agreed” with the professionals.
“The Canary Islands Medical Associations represent the entire profession and we must ensure the good performance of medicine and the development and competencies of our profession, from this reality, recognized by current legislation, we do not understand how from the public administration, Given the structural deficiencies of Primary Care within the National Health System, it is intended to undermine the functions of doctors,” they point out.
They also affirm that there is currently a “diaspora of doctors” trained in Spain as a “consequence of the contempt” of all the administrations because there is “excessive workload, poor organization, offensive salaries that do not correspond to their responsibilities and shameful contracts”.
Faced with this reality, professionals are imported from other places “and since they have not been enough”, the health authorities “skip” the current legislation or reinterpret it and “try to delegate part of the powers of medicine to other professionals, collaborating thus discrediting medicine and offending the dignity of medical professionals”, they indicate.
In his opinion, “the imposition by way of fait accompli has never given good results”, which is why they demand that citizens and professionals be informed, in addition to agreeing on solutions.
