The expectation for the Santa Cruz May Festivities, with which the founding of the city is celebrated on May 3, 1494, is exceeding the forecasts of the capital City Council, which has seen how participation for the main events has grown exponentially, as is the case of the aspirants to Queen of the May Fiestas.
The registration period to participate in the Gala, which will be held on the 28th, closed on April 9 with a total of 45 people registered. The contest rules establish that the maximum number of candidates will be 35, so that, a priori, at least ten of those registered will not be able to go on stage.
At this time, the Autonomous Organization for Parties and Recreational Activities (Oafar) is reviewing all the registrations to confirm that the applicants meet the requirements established in the bases, so that those who do not meet them in the first place will be discarded, and then to those who registered last, until completing that maximum of 35 candidates.
For the Magician and Children’s Magician Election Gala, the maximum number of candidates, set at 20, has not been exceeded, a contest that will be held on the 29th, also on the stage of Plaza de la Candelaria.
Another of the acts that is arousing the greatest interest is the Baile de Magos, which will take place on May 2 in the surroundings of La Noria street. Fiestas is studying the possibility of increasing the number of tables (641 were installed last year), given the expectation that the celebration of the 529 years of the founding of the city is arousing. The system to reserve them will be the same as last year, that is, through the internet, although Fiestas will save an amount so that they can be reserved in person at the Oafar offices.
It is estimated that it will be at the end of next week when the company that is in charge of online reservations will be hired. A contract that has been delayed until Fiestas has been assured, by the company that is carrying out the works in the area around Plaza de Europa, that these will not affect the celebration of the Baile de Magos, nor your safety.
This year’s edition will feature a hundred acts distributed throughout different areas of the city. The García Sanabria park, together with the Plaza de La Candelaria, will once again be the most important points where the events of the festivities are organized, to which other locations will be added within the novelties that are prepared in the programming and that will include activities cultural, sports and leisure.
In the same way, the area of La Noria will host the traditional Baile de Magos, which in its last edition brought together more than 14,000 people.

Lastly, the Typical Food contest will be held on May 30 in the area of Alameda del Duque de Santa Elena.
