La Cuesta lives with fervor the Procession of the Encounter

The La Cuesta Meeting Procession experienced a new edition marked by the fervor that always characterizes it. Our Father Jesus Captive before Caifás left in procession from the parish of Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria and María Santísima de los Dolores, from that of Nuestra Señora de La Paz y Unión. Each one made their tour through the streets of the area until they met in the Plaza de la Candelaria, the main moment of the act. The cold and the rain at times also marked the appointment.

It was planned that the President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, joined the Holy Tuesday of La Cuesta. Other political representatives from different formations also participated in this event, marked by following the forms of Holy Week in Andalusia. It is not a coincidence. His origins are found in the versatile Joaquín López Barrera, who died in 1995 and better known by his stage name: Jaky Romero. A Sevillian and professional dancer, he was in charge of implementing this procession, which took place for the first time in April 1993.

The researcher Julio Torres addressed this tradition in the work La Cuesta de Arguijón, an Encounter in Spring, presented last year. «They were devotions of Jaky Jesús del Gran Poder, of whose Pontifical and Royal Brotherhood and Brotherhood of Nazarenes he was a brother, and María Santísima de la Amargura, of the Sevillian brotherhood of the same name, based in her home street. Intimately he always longed to bring to the island that he loved so much a little piece of that, his other land; a commitment that he more than achieved”, contextualizes the book.

«He acquired the image of a Captive from the Sevillian image maker Antonio Dubé de Luque, who managed to place the cult in the old parish of La Candelaria, located on December 26th street in La Cuesta. By then he already had the size of a little Dolorosa to dress at his home, at number 52 Calle Siete. This, his particular Dolorosa, would end up receiving worship in the parish of La Paz and Unión, although it was later replaced by a larger one, both acquired from another Sevillian image maker, Juan gonzalez Garcia,” says Torres.

There were also acts yesterday in the town of La Laguna. In the morning, the Chrism Mass took place in the Cathedral, while in the afternoon there was a Eucharistic celebration in La Concepción in honor of the Tears of Saint Peter. Later the procession of this step took place, while that of Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, which was also scheduled to process, did not do so due to the weather.

For its part, another Eucharist was celebrated in the Cathedral for the Lord tied to the Column, with the blessing of the habits of the new brothers of the Fraternity of Flagellation. It was followed by the parade of the footsteps of the Lord tied to the Column, the Holy Christ of Remedies and Our Lady of Sorrows, accompanied by the Royal, Very Illustrious and Capitular Brotherhood of the Flagellation of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Holy Christ of Remedies and Our Lady of Sorrows.
