The Governing Board of the Santa Cruz City Council has awarded today the integral rehabilitation works of the Viera y Clavijo Cultural Parka performance by the Department of Works and Infrastructures and which has a budget of 11,846,527.04 euros.
The award is conditional on the addendum that must be signed with the Ministry of Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands, whose processing is already well advanced, “so this execution will foreseeably begin during the summer”, advanced the mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez.
Bermúdez revealed that this action in the Viera y Clavijo Cultural Park “will achieve in 2025 to return to the public a historical and cultural heritage that has been part of the lives of many people in this city since its construction in 1903.”
He added that until 1978 it functioned as a school for Las Asuncionistas and many generations of women from this city studied there, in addition to having housed the Pérez Minik Theater, the Menéndez Pelayo International University, the University for the Elderly or the Santa Cruz School of Music, as well of the Department of Culture itself.
For his part, the Councilor for Infrastructures, Dámaso Arteaga, highlighted that it is a project of 11.8 million euros, which is “the amount for which the company has been awarded, after quite some time, after overcome the pertinent reports from the departments that it had to consider when being a BIC, among them the Cabildo’s Patrimony”.
Dámaso Arteaga confirmed that the rehabilitation of the main building of the Viera y Clavijo Cultural Park “is one of the objectives of this Corporation, an action that will last approximately 24 months.”
The work, said Arteaga, “will extend during the year 2023, 2024 and surely 2025 and the intention is the rehabilitation of the building that includes multidisciplinary spaces to generate cultural activities of all kinds.”
He concluded by stating that this action focuses on what is the building and the landscaped spaces of its main space, so this is the first of the actions of this phase of rehabilitation of the Viera y Clavijo Cultural Park.
