The president of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Gustavo Matos, said this Monday that presiding over the regional Chamber is the “greatest honor” of his political career that now continues “with the counter at zero” and without knowing what his political responsibility will be after the next elections.
In a press conference to take stock of the activity of the X Legislature, he indicated that it has been a “responsibility” for those who believe in the democratic system and in the Canary Islands and that his personal aspirations “are fulfilled” with this position since he has been “something more than a citizen” and on whom “the weight of the institution” has fallen.
“Any mistake is made by the Chamber and honoring the position is the main responsibility,” he added.
He has indicated that he repeats as a PSOE candidate at number two on the list for Tenerife and “except for an absolutely unsuspected catastrophe” he will renew his act of deputy and without knowing what the future will hold for him.
He has confessed that everything he has tried in politics “has always gone wrong” and that is why he has learned “not to make many plans”
He has also stressed that the position has served him to “mature” and transfer to society “a more unknown version” since he went from being “the wayward deputy” to the president of the Chamber, ironizing that “the bad guy in the class has been delegate position.
The president thanked the work of the Board, which has left him with “unrepeatable colleagues” who have also known how to “put aside” partisan issues, and highlighted the “responsibility and height of vision” of all groups, especially those of the opposition, who have been “very helpful”.
It has also had an impact on the “international facet” of the Parliament, which has presided over the Conference of Regional Legislative Assemblies of Europe (CALRE) for two years, has helped to expand the “Canary Islands brand” and demonstrate that they are “better known” than what people believe
