SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 3 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –
Filmoteca Canaria has just received one of the most generous donations in its history regarding images filmed in Tenerife. It is a collection of 66 reels with 8 mm and Super 8 mm films made or filmed by Julián Acevedo, owner of the now-defunct ‘Acevedo’ Photographic Clinic.
In the reels you can see multiple scenes of outstanding events that happened on the island between the years 1950 and 1980. Among them there is also a documentary and films with the only footage located to date, or that is preserved, of the Agrupación Fotográfica de Tenerife and its activities.
The deposit of these reels to the Film Library has been the initiative of the sisters Carmen, Concepción and Victoria Acevedo, daughters of the owner of the studio, with the aim of having them digitized for their preservation as audiovisual heritage of the islands. Julián Acevedo was a member of the old Tenerife Photographic Association, created in 1956 and disappeared in the 1970s, and was a fan of non-professional cinema.
Julián filmed important events of his time such as a plague of locusts, a solar eclipse, a great storm that hit the north of the island, the burial of Bishop Pérez Cáceres, Pinito del Oro in the Circus, the Globetrotters in Tenerife in the years 50, the Festival of Murgas and Rondallas in the Plaza de Toros in 1962, the construction of the Autopista del Norte, the inauguration of the Basilica de la Candelaria, the Zoo of La Cuesta or parties and communions in the Colegio de la Pureza and in the Dominicans, among others.
In the background there are scenes from the 50s and 60s of the port of Santa Cruz and panoramic views of the city, the Spa, Puerto de la Cruz, Icod de los Vinos, Garachico, La Esperanza, Los Naranjeros, Los Rodeos or El Médano, as well as others from Playa de las Américas from 1970.
Among the films deposited, it is worth mentioning the documentary ‘Mascarada’, filmed by Julián Acevedo and Diego García Soto in 1972, which won the First Prize for Documentary at the 1st Amateur Film Contest of the Savings Bank; as well as four spools with images from the Tenerife Photographic Group, of whose activities no film had been located until now, so it will be very valuable material for researchers of the History of Photography in the Canary Islands and especially in Tenerife.
Among them there is an exhibition in the Circle of Friendship XII of January in Santa Cruz de Tenerife or a visit to the Santa Lastenia cemetery, both in 1958; in addition to two excursions by car of the members of the Association in the following two years.
