Tenerife awards the ‘Gold Medal’ to the Spanish Association Against Cancer and the Royal Academy of Medicine of the Canary Islands



On Thursday night, the Cabildo de Tenerife awarded the island’s Gold Medals to the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) and the Royal Academy of Medicine of the Canary Islands, as well as the title of ‘Favourite Son of the Island’ to posthumous title to the scientist Antonio Bello Pérez, at the request of the special commission in charge of the investigation of the file of these distinctions and with the unanimity of all the political groups of the corporation.

The ceremony was attended by the president of the Cabildo, Pedro Martín, the vice-presidents, Enrique Arriaga, Berta Pérez and Marian Franquet, as well as the institution’s secretary, Domingo Hernández, who read the agreement for awarding the medals, and with the members of the special commission in charge of these distinctions, representatives of the city councils of various municipalities on the island, and representatives and relatives of the honorees.

Martín, highlighted “the social and educational work of the Spanish Association Against Cancer, a leading entity in supporting people diagnosed with oncological pathologies and which has been carrying out uninterrupted activity on the island of Tenerife for more than thirty years” and regarding The Royal Academy of Medicine of the Canary Islands recalled the importance of an institution “that watches over research but also collaborates in the development of those aspects that affect the world of medicine, which, after all, are relevant to the totality of the society”.

On behalf of the Provincial Board of Santa Cruz de Tenerife of the Spanish Association Against Cancer, the medal was collected by its president, Andrés Orozco, and by its president, Francisco Perera, on behalf of the Royal Academy of Medicine of the Canary Islands.

The Cabildo de Tenerife also granted the researcher Antonio Bello the status of ‘Favorite Son’, “a scientist of recognized world prestige and one of the visible heads in the concept of agroecology”, highlighted the president, who stressed his “visionary, who revolutionized the way of understanding agriculture from a more sustainable point of view for the environment, without forgetting his teaching facet, endorsed by his presence at the universities of Navarra and Complutense in Madrid and as director of doctoral theses for many researchers from both the islands as outside them.

Antonio Bello González, who received the title on behalf of the researcher’s family, thanked the granting of this distinction and highlighted aspects of Antonio Bello’s social and academic memory, collects a note from the Cabildo.

The event, which was held in the Auditorio de Tenerife chamber hall, featured a recital for vibraphone and piano by Esther Ropón and Andrea Domínguez, who performed Claude Debussy’s Claro de Luna and the piece In your Quien Place by Keith Jarrett and Gary Burton, plus the Venezuelan Waltz and Contradanza by Paquito de Rivera
