In July 2022, the Santa Cruz City Council announced the unlocking of a new sports space that came to improve the facilities of the María Jiménez neighborhood, which only has a soccer field. Eight months later, the mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, presented the project to the residents of the neighborhood yesterday, whose work will go out to tender shortly, and which will be possible thanks to the transformation of the plot on which the new pavilion will be erected. , whose uses went from educational to sports.

The new space will be built on plot 15 of the aforementioned Santacrucero neighborhood, measuring 2,926 square meters, and which foresees an investment of more than 1.7 million euros, “an action that has a mixed, relatively new concept, where spaces for the practice of regulated sports with other more multipurpose areas and green and recreational spaces”, the councilor advanced. For his part, the Councilor for Works, Dámaso Arteaga, wanted to emphasize that “the most significant element of the program of needs proposed in this program is the covered sports space, which due to its dimensions can only fit longitudinally into the plot.” In addition, he added that “it is agreed that it has the capacity to accommodate a 40×20 meter multi-purpose court, while a variable radius curved roof has been designed in order to maximize the covered space and not raise the height too much. coronation to be as kind as possible to the built environment.”

Inmaculada Fuentes, councilor of the Anaga district, stressed that “the conditioning of sports equipment planned in this plot comes to respond to the demands of the neighborhood and represents a line of work of the current government team.” He added that, “in addition to practicing sports in the open air, we know that the location of these spaces promotes the relationship between the neighbors, an exercise in coexistence that can only bring favorable consequences for interaction and associationism, and, therefore, therefore, advantages in awareness and care of the public, that of all”.

construction

Finally, it must be taken into account that the construction period will be 12 months once the reconsideration act is signed. Regarding its design, it is indicated that the built element is located more or less centered on the plot and two separate terraced spaces are created diagonally to the south, made up of two ball courts, and to the north of it, the children’s playground, of in a way that connects both streets with slopes of less than 6%, dispensing with railings and creating activities with accessible routes, with shade along the entire length.
The approval of the Ministry of Education of the Government of the Canary Islands for this space to go from educational to sports is what has allowed a situation that had been paralyzed for years to be unblocked. Education considered that the schooling needs were covered with the CEIP Rafael Gaviño del Bosque.
