The canaries made just over 5.6 million trips last year, representing 3.3% of the total, with an expense of 2,192.3 million, according to data released this Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). .
The residents of the islands were the ones who spent the most among all the autonomous communities with 387 euros, at a rate of 80 euros per day.
At the national level, the trips made by residents in Spain increased by 19.9% in 2022 compared to 2021 and the total expenditure made on these trips shot up by 54.6%, up to 50,292 million euros.
Specifically, Spaniards made 171.4 million trips in 2022, while the overnight stays associated with them totaled 745.8 million, 19.1% more.
90.6% of the trips undertaken by Spaniards last year had national territory as their main destination, and 9.4% went to foreign countries.
Internal destination trips accumulated 81.6% of overnight stays and 70.5% of total spending, with an average daily spending of 58 euros. On the other hand, trips abroad accounted for 18.4% of overnight stays and 29.5% of total spending, with an average daily spending of 108 euros.
The main reasons for travel were leisure (51.6% of the total) and visits to family or friends (34.2%).
According to the INE, leisure trips accounted for 59.8% of total spending, with an average daily spend of 75 euros, although the highest average daily spend was on business trips (121 euros).
Residents opted for non-market accommodation in 58.4% of all trips. These trips, which accounted for 59.3% of the overnight stays, presented the lowest average daily expenditure (35 euros). The highest average daily expense (145 euros) was for trips with hotel accommodation.
In internal travel, spending on accommodation represented the highest percentage of total spending (26.7%), followed by spending on bars and restaurants (25.6%) and transportation (21.5%).
In trips abroad, the item with the greatest weight over the total was transportation (30.4%), followed by spending on accommodation (21.9%) and in bars and restaurants (17.3%).
By quarters, the highest average daily expenditure was recorded for internal trips in the second and fourth (69 euros in both) and for trips abroad in the fourth (141 euros).
ANDALUSIA, MAIN DESTINATION
Andalusia was the destination for 16.4% of the total trips made in 2022, followed by Catalonia (14.1%) and the Valencian Community (10.5%).
The destinations visited to a lesser extent were La Rioja (1% of the total), Comunidad Foral de Navarra (1.2%) and Región de Murcia (2.0%).
The highest average daily expenses occurred on trips to the Canary Islands (87 euros), Comunidad de Madrid (84) and the Basque Country (82).
For their part, the lowest average values were for Castilla y León (43 euros) and Región de Murcia and Castilla-La Mancha (both with 45).
Residents of the Community of Madrid accumulated the highest percentage of trips in 2022 (18.4% of the total), followed by residents of Catalonia (17.6%) and Andalusia (14.6%).
The highest average daily expenses were made by residents of the Canary Islands (80 euros per day), Catalonia (75) and Galicia (72).
On the contrary, the lowest were in the Region of Murcia (59 euros), La Rioja (60) and Aragón (62).
37.9 MILLION TRIPS IN THE FOURTH QUARTER
Residents in Spain made 37.9 million trips in the fourth quarter of 2022, 4.2% more than in the same period of 2021, and spent 10,563.2 million euros, representing an increase of 29.8 % compared to the same period of 2021.
89.3% of the trips had national territory as their main destination, with an increase of 0.9% compared to the fourth quarter of the previous year. On the other hand, trips abroad, which represent 10.7% of the total, increased by 44.5%.
The main autonomous communities of destination for resident trips between October and December of last year were Andalusia (15.6% of the total), Catalonia (12.8%) and Castilla y León (9.6%).
In terms of spending, it rose 12.2% on trips to a national destination and 83.1% on those made abroad. Average daily spending stood at 69 euros for trips with a domestic destination and 141 euros for those made abroad.
Looking at the autonomous community of main destination, the highest average daily expenses were recorded on trips to Comunidad de Madrid (102 euros), the Canary Islands (98) and the Basque Country (91).
For their part, the lowest average daily expenses occurred in the Valencian Community (55 euros) and in Castilla y León and the Region of Murcia (56 in both).
