Carlos Medina Dorta has not had it easy in recent terms, in which he has been both in the government group and in the opposition. After his expulsion from the PSOE in June 2021 together with his partner Sandra Ramos for failing to comply with the party’s guidelines, which was committed to a pact with Ciudadanos (Cs), linked to the PSOE-Cs agreement in the Cabildo de Tenerife, both have founded Somos Tacoronte , a new municipal political formation, independent, and that was born to work for and for the neighbors. He is aware that the first handicap he is going to encounter in the face of May 28 is mobilizing the public and convincing them that there may be a different alternative to the ones that have existed up to now.
Has your time in the PSOE left a bad taste in your mouth?
“The feeling that I have left is a disappointment, because the PSOE was really the instrument that I had chosen to work for my people, and with which a number of people had committed ourselves to improve the quality of life in the municipality and all that has been seen truncated. It is quite sad that after so many years things cannot be done in a consensual and dialogue manner, especially when the same project, the same concern, acronyms and a city model are shared”.
But you will have learned something…
“Of course. And not only from the political point of view, but I had the opportunity to be in the City Council and incorporate the management experience, and I remain convinced that Tacoronte deserves a municipal government with committed people who are not playing politicians with the acronyms for your personal benefit. That is why I will continue fighting from Somos Tacoronte so that some social ideas continue to be managed in the City Council for the municipality.
-Why do you think the City Council does not work?
“There are entrenched situations and a lot of refusal to understand new forms of municipal management. I believe that a lot of organization is needed and to be completely free to make decisions with a certain depth within the Consistory and until now the mayors have been mortgaged and for this reason they have a certain rejection against them, starting from their own staff, in which there are great professionals who do everything they can and the best they know to make the City Council work, but it doesn’t depend on them either. You have to have an organization endowed with resources and well defined about what are the obligations and duties that each one has to assume within the organizational structure”.
-How and why was Somos Tacoronte born?
“At first, a little out of rebellion and later, because of the weariness of the people, who give up their trust and set their expectations in the different political projects that are later truncated, put in a drawer and personal and community interests take precedence. parties in other areas and Tacoronte remains in the background. The idea is to break with this and for this we present ourselves as an alternative in the next elections”.
-How is it different from other political formations?
“In that we are free and also aware of the difficulties that the creation of an independent and autonomous political formation entails, but that also implies that we only have to owe ourselves to our neighbors and our obligation and illusion is to work from freedom for it . We will put our concerns on the table and if someone wants to reach agreements with Somos Tacoronte, they will have to have that commitment towards those lines that we want to work on in the City Council with dates to carry them out ”.
-You governed together with CC and later with NC and Sí se puede. With whom would you agree if necessary? Only the PP remains…
“We do not have red lines with anyone, but lines of work to find solutions to the problems that we have detected with a reasonable period of time to execute them. Personal problems must be put aside, it is not even a matter of political parties, but of an unbearable struggle of egos. That is why Somos Tacoronte aspires to be a backbone of the search for consensus. Another thing is the confidence that the candidates of each party can give us at a given moment and if they are willing to comply with the agreements, something that has not happened in this last term”.
-Cs lost a historic opportunity in this mandate?
“Because it was the main group and the one that won the elections, it lost a golden opportunity and to consolidate a unique alternative project. Sometimes it is not a numerical question but rather how convinced you can be of the political project and in this case it seems that there is no project, which has been dissolving throughout the mandate. When I was fired from the government, he had the historic opportunity to present a government alternative, but apparently, it was not his intention.
– But you proposed it to him?
“Yes, I talked about it with Virginia Bacallado. She depended on her, because she was going to have our support ”.
-Do you dare to predict how many councilors the 28M will get?
“It will be difficult, but my aspiration is to have my own group, that is, three councilors.”
