The construction of the Las Charquetas reservoir and the distribution network will complete the insular ring of reclaimed water. For this, the Council of Tenerife and the State Society for Agrarian Infrastructures (Seiasa) agree an investment of more than 18 million euros. These actions will be 80% financed (14,416,000 euros) by the entity dependent on the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA), charged to funds received through the European Union Recovery and Resilience Mechanism, and 20% (3,604,000 euros) by the Corporation chaired by Pedro Martín.
The insular president explains that “this collaboration agreement, which we will formalize next month, will practically allow complete the insular ring of reclaimed water, guaranteeing the necessary balance in its distribution and transferring quality water to farmers throughout the Island. In this case, it covers the municipalities of adejeGuia de Isora and Santiago del Teide.
Pedro Martín defends that «thehe raft of Las Charquetas is essential to regulate the flows and the allocation of the different consumptions in the agricultural region of the west of Tenerife”, while the distribution network “will guarantee the agricultural irrigation of the farms between the coast of Adeje, Guía de Isora and Santiago del Teide, with quality water at an affordable price for farmers.
The works
The objective of phases I and II is to establish a treated water distribution network under pressure that dominates a useful cultivation area of about 1,200 hectares, mostly dedicated to banana cultivation (almost 90%), within the municipalities of Adeje, Guía de Isora and Santiago del Teide.
The Cabildo highlights that an investment of 8,480,000 euros is planned for this action and the layout of the networks has been designed taking into account that in most of the route the pipes will run along existing tracks and paths.

Refering to Las Charquetas regulating pondits realization has an estimated budget of 9,540,000 euros, contemplating an approximate capacity of 250,000 cubic meters, with a total height of 16 meters and that will be covered with a multilayer sheet.
The insular Councilor for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Javier Parrilla, explains that the execution of this project will be divided into three phases and will have an execution period of 36 months. The first two are those relating to the conduction of reclaimed water to Santiago del Teideone of the most important municipalities on the island in the agricultural field, and the third, which will be carried out in parallel, is the construction of the Las Chaquetas pond”.
The counselor emphasizes that this action is part of “within the strategy to extend the use of reclaimed water in agriculture, which gives a greater guarantee of stability in the supply and water quality.”
It should be remembered that the state trading company Aguas de las Cuencas de España (Acuaes), of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, undertakes works in the area of the purification and reuse of wastewater from the West of Tenerife, whose total planned investment exceeds 27 million euros. It does so within the framework of the agreement signed with the Cabildo that will involve an investment of 170 million euros. With this, Granadilla de Abona, Santiago del Teide, Guía de Isora, Arona Este-San Miguel, the Acentejo region and the La Orotava Valley will be provided with a comprehensive sanitation and purification system that will allow the problem to be definitively resolved. non-compliance with European directives on water protection.
