Tenerife continues to seek solutions or, at least, patches for the nightmare that its residents are experiencing regarding traffic, which since the last century has conditioned the living conditions of its inhabitants for the worse on the main island traffic routes, such as the TF-5, known as Autopista del Norte (officially recognized as such despite not meeting the conditions for such a category), but also on the TF-1.
Without a doubt, it is impossible to understand the keys to this matter without remembering that, in March 2019, in the province of Tenerife there were some 840,000 vehicles registered on an Island whose recognized inhabitants are 931,646 in data from last year, which makes it the Island most inhabited in Macaronesia. Although those affected do not need references about what they suffer on a daily basis, it is necessary that in the last century the traffic jams were such that they allowed the local television stations at that time to interview the drivers at the window, given the paralysis that was suffered on the main road of communication that connects the North with the metropolitan area.
Undoubtedly, this insular crisis has regained prominence after the Cabildo de Tenerife proposed to the University of La Laguna (ULL) delay entry into their classrooms at ten in the morning to alleviate traffic on the TF-5 in the early hours of the morning, to which the rector, Rosa Aguilar, responded yesterday, advancing that, consequently, they have polled faculties and centers of the institution on the possibility of delaying the start of classes, although he acknowledged that, in his opinion, the impact will be “very minor.”
The truth is that the offer is tempting; Not in vain, the Island Council has offered no less than 20 million euros in two years in exchange for delaying the start of school activity, to which Aguilar has responded that in most centers nothing can be done, because there are morning and afternoon shifts, and, in addition, all the “idiosyncrasies and logistics” must be reviewed, including labor issues.
Of course, the rector recognized yesterday that, for now, the Faculty of Health Sciences is the only one that would be available to start classes at 10:00 a.m. in its first three courses. She understands that in many centers “it is not possible” to alter the schedule, but she shows all the sensitivity. “If we can help with something, we are going to do it out of social responsibility,” she clarified.
The PP speaks of “pure electoralism” and CC says that they already asked for it
The candidate of the Popular Party for the Presidency of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Lope Afonso, considered yesterday that the proposal of the Socialist Government to change the entrance hours of the students of the University of La Laguna as “pure electoralism” and condemned “the tacticism of the that this government boasts in electoral discount time, which has not done anything in four years and, nevertheless, they propose this measure two months before the elections ”.
For Lope Afonso, offering 20 million euros to the University, in exchange for modifying the entry times of the students, seems to him “arrivista”, taking into account “the financial situation of the ULL, which has already been denounced by the rector in communication media”.
For her part, the Canary Islands Coalition candidate for the Tenerife Council, Rosa Dávila, complained that the proposal to change the schedules of the University of La Laguna was already made by the nationalist group a few months ago and then was rejected by the group of government.
“The proposal should have been made four years ago and not now, two months before the elections. Pedro Martín continues to arrive late to the problems of Tenerife ”, affirmed Dávila, whose party governed the Cabildo for decades without implementing the measures that he now proposes as urgently applicable.
