The Department of Sustainable City and Planning of Cross portdirected by David Hernandez (ACP)already has the technical study that rules out the construction of the new auditorium in the city on the plot of San Francisco Park and raises the use of the site of the old bus station to house “the new auditorium, two public buildings and up to four levels of parking.”
David Hernandez points out that “in recent months they have been working on the urban and technical feasibility study, which is key to being able to convene the future public tender for the award of the construction project and concession of this plot». With this alternative proposal for the location of the future auditorium“the old location in Parque San Francisco is definitively rejected”.
Hernández stresses that “carrying out the project on the plot initially planned would mean a disproportionate extra cost, as well as a patrimonial and economic risk for the public coffers that we are not willing to run without technical support». In addition, he recalled that the 16th century hermitage and the 18th century church, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest, were affected during the demolition process, with the appearance of fissures.
He ideas competition that in its day was called for rebuild San Francisco Parkproposed a project valued at 5 million euros, “which with the passage of time and the detection of new needs and difficulties has been increasing its cost to around the figure of 21 million».
“The plot of the old bus station will be able to house the new auditorium, two public buildings and up to four parking levels”
«The geotechnical information of the plot has been completed with two reports on the risks of excavation in the old San Francisco Parkby the Urban Consortiumwhose conclusions warn of the risk that the vibrations of the machinery and the complex excavation process can cause both for the Church of San Francisco together with the Hermitage of San Juan Bautistaas well as for the adjoining residential buildings on San Juan and Agustín de Betancourt streets, for which reason it will be proposed to definitively reject the previous project,” the mayor explained.
The new location for the future auditorium of Cross port, in the old bus station «represents a better urban solution, both for the functionality of the equipment itself, which could accommodate proposals that were discarded at the time due to lack of space. At the same time, it will have a better connection with the interchange through Puerto Viejo and Mazaroco streetsand with the generation of new free spaces for people, in which events can be carried out”.
The mayor concludes that despite the change of location of the project, “The Cabildo’s commitment to co-finance the work continues”. To reuse the space in Parque San Francisco, “a consultation process will be opened with the public to assess possible uses, such as a plaza or a multipurpose building without the complications that creating two basements and the risks of the auditorium would entail.” In his opinion, “We have the opportunity to make a more viable project that gives a comprehensive response to the needs of the port in the old station and we are going to take advantage of it by making good use of resources”.
