a path to discover in Tenerife

He Masca ravine trail in Tenerife It was closed for three years for works, but since it reopened its doors to the public in 2021, it has not stopped receiving visits, both from nature-loving islanders themselves and from tourists attracted by the natural charm of this area of the municipality of Buenavista.

He iconic ravine in the south of the island reopened on March 27, 2021 after 3 years closed for security reasons. Of course, to go through it now you have to ask for permission from the Cabildo, it is forbidden to use the pier to return by sea – that is, you have to make the hard ascent back to the Masca farmhouse – and you have to wear a helmet, due to the always latent danger of landslides .

One of the main activities carried out inThe end of the descent was a boat ride to Los Gigantes in order to avoid the climb to the return and enjoy the dolphins and whales that inhabit those waters at the foot of the giant cliffs.

Due to canyon pier conditions, these crossings are currently suspended and you must go back up the slope on foot. During the 10 kilometers of the route, the rock walls and the varied vegetation of the ravine will accompany the visitors until they reach the Masca beach and then return to the farmhouse. An impressive throat.

The risks

Although there is a path and it is approved, and after the investment of almost a million euros to put it up, the biggest risk is the lack of information about its difficulty. People think it’s a walk to the beach. But it’s four hours downhill, and although there is now a metal cable for much of the way and safety nets on the slopes, it has steep steps.

The ravine is one of the black spots on the Island, with a large number of accidents. For example, In October 2017, a German tourist died after falling from a height of eight meters.s.

One of the key elements of the trail is access control through the website and its reservation platform (www.caminobarrancodemasca.com), which allows you to reserve a place at a specific time for the visit.

for now, the road will only be open on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. In summer it will close at 18:00. Outside of these hours, when the access control system will not be working and there will be no personnel in the area, the road will remain closed “for security reasons”.
