He President of the Canary IslandsÁngel Víctor Torres, has confirmed this Monday that the municipality of Güímar will be the location of the future chydro-eolic power station of Tenerifein which both the Government of Spain and the president of Red Eléctrica, Beatriz Corredor, agree.

The Güímar hydroelectric plant, an investment of “hundreds of millions”, will be added to the one already operating in Gorona del Viento (El Hierro) and the one underway in Chira-Soria (Gran Canaria), within the framework of the Canarian Agenda for Sustainable Development 2030, Torres said in statements to the media.

Torres has made these statements in Guía de Isora, in the west of Tenerife, where he has attended, together with the presidents of the councils of Tenerife and La Gomera, Pedro Martín and Casimiro Curbelo, at the beginning of the works of Red Eléctrica of the submarine cable that will connect the two islands.

“We propose a reasonable, logical and operational energy solution”, which requires a waterfall and a storage plant in Güímar, and has the support of the administrations and Red Eléctrica, said the president, who reiterated that the The goal is for the Canary Islands to have 100% sustainable energy by 2040 at the latest, from the current 20%.

Torres has framed in this process the deployment of the submarine cable that will connect Tenerife and La Gomera, with the start of the works, budgeted at 114 million euros and which put an end to a “torturous” administrative process.

This connection is “an example” of the Government of the Canary Islands’ commitment to clean energy, Torres stressed, and pointed out that in this legislature the Climate Change Law has been carried out, it has gone from 400 homes with photovoltaic self-consumption to almost 10,000, the dismantling of the Cepsa refinery in Tenerife has begun, the Chira Soria power station in Gran Canaria is underway and this month work begins on five wind farms in La Gomera.
