The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council, through the Autonomous Organization for Festivities and Recreational Activities (Oafar), opened last Friday, the 17th, the registration period to participate in the different contests and events planned in the programming of the Festivities of May 2023. Those interested may register until April 9. For the Councilor for Fiestas, Alfonso Cabello, “the May Fiestas are not only an appointment with tradition and vernacular culture, but with the socioeconomic dynamism of Santa Cruz de Tenerife”; for which he encourages “active participation in a series of contests that connect different generations of chicharreros”.
Cabello highlights “the latent illusion that is palpable in the environment to continue enjoying the activity in the streets and squares of the capital”, stating that “the forecasts indicate that, during the founding festivities, we will receive thousands of visitors who will be able to participate in the more than 100 events planned between April 21 and Canary Islands Day”.
On this occasion, the main novelty is the celebration of the Contest-Exhibition of Traditional Canarian Decoration of Balconies, Fred. Olsen-Hotel Tecina. Although, although, during the period of confinement, a virtual modality was carried out, on this occasion the first face-to-face edition takes place. The different compositions will be visited by the jury on May 3 and from the street, so only balconies located at a maximum height of 9 meters are allowed to participate. The registration period for this contest will be until April 9.
The registration of the candidates for Queen of the Fiestas de Mayo, in its adult modality, may also be formalized until April 9. Up to a total of 35 applicants may be present who will be part of the gala scheduled for Friday, April 28, on the stage of Plaza de la Candelaria.
For their part, the applicants for the Magician and Children’s Magician Election Gala will have a maximum of 20 candidates in the male and female categories. The participants will be between the ages of five and ten, and this show will be held on April 29.
People and groups interested in taking part in the XV Contest-Exhibition of school crosses with recycled materials, in the Contest of Crosses with natural flowers through the different neighborhoods of the city, or in the Artistic Exhibition of flower crosses on the Rambla de Santa Cruz, whose celebration is scheduled for Wednesday, May 3, have the same registration period as the rest.
The XLVI Regional Exhibition of Flowers, Plants, and Traditional and Contemporary Canarian Crafts, and the Canarian Gastronomic Crafts Exhibition, will take place from May 1 to 7 at Parque García Sanabria.
People who want to take part in the Children’s Drawing and Painting Contest, framed in the XLVI Regional Exhibition of Flowers and Plants, may register from May 1 to 3, from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Oafar stand located in the park. The theme of this edition is A sculpture from the García Sanabria park.
The Typical Food Contest is held on May 30
The registration period for the Typical Food Contest will also be open until April 9, with the contest being held on May 30, in the surroundings of the Alameda del Duque de Santa Elena. Registration is also open for the installation of traditional balloon, nougat, sweets and derivatives stalls.
