SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, March 20 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The CC-PNC group of the Cabildo de Tenerife will request an extraordinary plenary session on the illegal discharges from the Tenerife Environmental Complex that have led to a complaint by the Arico City Council before the Environment and Urbanism Prosecutor’s Office.
The nationalist councilor Blanca Pérez, the mayor of Arico, Sebastián Martín, and the third deputy mayor and councilor for Economy, Contracting, Economic Development and Tourism, Víctor García, offered a press conference on Monday to publicize the initiatives.
Blanca Pérez indicated that they are going to request an extraordinary plenary session in the Cabildo because they want the situation to be clarified and responsibilities settled: “The complaint from the Arico City Council denotes that there are serious breaches in the integrated environmental authorization and that will have to be clarified. It is seen that they are throwing away without any type of treatment as construction waste and mattresses”.
The CC-PNC counselor pointed out that the Cabildo “is breaking a negative record in terms of waste recovery and it may have to do with what the Arico City Council has denounced.” “This is not an electoral issue and perhaps someone hides behind it to cover up the serious irregularities that the Complex has. In addition, since 2020 the Government of the Canary Islands has not carried out an inspection and we believe that it is necessary to carry it out,” she added.
For his part, Sebastián Martín pointed out that the technical report says that there are serious irregularities in the management of waste from the Tenerife Environmental Complex. “The report says that in less than an hour 20 trucks entered to dump directly without being treated. The technical reports provide clear evidence of violations of environmental legislation and that there may also be an alleged environmental crime,” the mayor explained.
Martín pointed out that from the technical services of the City Council they have forwarded the complaint to the environmental body, in this case to the General Directorate for the Environment of the Government of the Canary Islands, to the Canarian Agency for the Protection of the Natural Environment and, as the technical reports consider that there may be indications of a crime, they have also transferred it to the Environmental Prosecutor’s Office so that they can initiate an investigation process and determine the responsibilities.
Víctor García assured that Arico “has lost more than a million euros a year in investments by the Cabildo, which has not sat down with the Arico City Council to discuss compensation.” “The condition is very great for the municipality, especially in the center of Tajao and the adjoining farms due to the plastic that is blown away. The PSOE has been managing the Tenerife Environmental Complex for almost a decade and we have regressed in waste management” , indicated.
