SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, March 17 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The electoral calendar of the elections for the Chancellor’s Office of the University of La Laguna began today, Friday, with the presentation before the Senate of the two candidacies that concur in this appeal: Francisco García, professor of Business Organization, and Rosa Aguilar. , current rector and professor of Systems Engineering and Automation.

After the draw for the turn to speak, Francisco García was the first to speak, emphasizing that he accepted the proposal to be a candidate last December, a decision that he communicated to the rector when he returned from vacation. His motivation to take this step is based on his 23 years of service as a professor at this academic center, in addition to the broad group of university students who have encouraged him and his deep conviction that public service is at risk and needs a change of course.

The programmatic principles of the candidate are based on the defense of the public university, bastion of equity, and knowledge, the latter raw material that will mark the future of the islands, he pointed out. The stable and sufficient financing of the public service is another pillar of the candidacy, in addition to the belief in democratic, participatory and transparent governance, with greater participation of collegiate bodies. A more humanist university is another of the foundations of Francisco García’s candidacy, to contribute to social change aligned with the 2030 Agenda.

Regarding the governance structure, he stressed that the Management will focus on regulatory and organic simplification, as well as procedures. A plan for the modernization and planning and provision of administration and service posts is planned. The person chosen for this task in this candidacy is María Teresa Covisa Rubia, services inspector and currently head of service of the Modernization Directorate of the Cabildo de Tenerife.

NERVES AND ILLUSION

Rosa Aguilar Chinea presented her professional career within the university, where she has held various management positions. “Nerves and illusion” were the words of the candidate in the Senate when facing this challenge. She presents herself after four years of very intense work, she said, with advances in the social value of the university, improvement of 65 critical processes, automation of more than 100,000 annual files and clear advances in modernization.

Aguilar recalled that during his tenure, degrees in Nutrition and Dietetics and in Physical Activity and Sports Sciences have been implemented, there have been 210 new teaching staff hired and a list of substitutions for administration and services staff has finally been created .

He also maintained that the University of La Laguna does relevant science on all continents, has international internships for students, approved its new Statutes and launched the Psychological and Speech Therapy Service, as well as participatory budgets, the guidance service sexual violence and the publication of various reports on social responsibility, among other actions.

The candidate explained that she wants to continue along this path of change, where progress has also been made in transparency, going from a rating of 4.86 to 9.69. “We have achieved all this while facing two unprecedented situations, the pandemic and the volcanic eruption”, of which she said that, far from being paralyzed, the institution has taken the opportunity to grow and strengthen itself.

After the two exhibitions, the different claustral groups questioned the candidates to clarify doubts and learn more about their proposals.
