SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, March 14 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The candidate of the Popular Party for the Presidency of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Lope Afonso, has called on the president of the insular Institution, Pedro Martín, to do “whatever he has to do and lead once and for all the negotiations to end the strike of the tram, which started on February 17 and affects thousands of users”.
Lope Afonso has been forceful in stating that the Popular Party is asking the president of the insular government to exercise his responsibility and to clarify the nature of the alleged coercion denounced by the Metropolitano workers, and which have caused the works council to extend the strike, becoming an indefinite strike.
Afonso clarified that the tram workers have communicated this morning that the strike has become indefinite “after the alleged coercion and reprisals against workers and their representatives, which have been brought to the attention of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Provincial Prosecutor’s Office and the legal services of the unions themselves”.
For this reason, the workers have announced the suspension of negotiations and an indefinite strike until the president of the Cabildo intervenes.
Lope Afonso has regretted that the “inaction” of the president has “entrenched” this conflict, which arose “before the legitimate claim of the workers to exercise their function, with all the guarantees of job security.”
He also wanted to recall that the Popular Party led a proposal in the Cabildo, which was supported by the majority of the plenary session, to implement the figure of an intermediary to facilitate the reaching of agreements during the negotiation with the workers.
“Despite the fact that the proposal was approved by the plenary session, the insular government has not been able to implement it, going against the plenary mandate and thus causing serious harm to Tenerife society, which sees how aggravate the already significant mobility problems that Tenerife has”, criticized the popular candidate.
